ASEAN unites in narcotics prevention workshop

BANGKOK, 25 February 2016 (NNT) – Member states from ASEAN have joined hands in a drug monitoring workshop meant to push forward an international information database concerning illegal drugs, according to Narcotics Control Board (NCB) Deputy Secretary-General Naramon Chuangrungsi.

The deputy secretary-general presided over the opening ceremony to a workshop dedicated to the creation of 2016 ASEAN Drug Monitoring Report, with participation from the delegation of ASEAN member states, as well as China and Japan.

The workshop is serving as an exchange platform for information concerning narcotic suppression, including where the overall narcotics situation is bad, where dealers are located, where drugs are smuggled. This is part of the active measure against the ever-changing drug smuggling activities that have developed since the integration of ASEAN Community which enables better connectivity between the ten members.

More intimate exchanges among officials from ASEAN countries will be the start of an efficient solution to narcotics in the regional and global level, according to the NCB deputy chief.

On this matter, a Brunei chief intelligence official on drugs suppression, Nordiana Awang, said drugs is not too tough of an issue and can be suppressed through border control, which requires constant monitoring.

She has said this meeting can yield benefits to participating states to gather relevant information on drugs in order to effectively address the issue.
