Erdogan says Syria ceasefire plan will only serve to benefit Assad

"We want to say frankly that these voices are a call for war rather than for peace"

ANKARA: -- A US-Russian plan for a ceasefire in Syria has been heavily criticised by the Turkish President, who claims it will really only serve to benefit the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

“We endorse a ceasefire that would relieve Syrian brothers,” said Recep Tyyip Erdogan.

“But it’s worrying to see that with this ceasefire Assad’s regime, responsible for the killing of more than a half million people, and the powers who are backing him, receive open support while a hesitant tone is taken towards the opposition.”

Erdogan also accused the West, Russia and Iran of “permitting, directly or indirectly, the killing of innocent people”.

But Russia has hit back at critics of the ceasefire plan.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: “Literally on the day Russia and the United States approved the joint initiative on the ceasefire in Syria, voices could be heard from the capitals of US allies and from Washington questioning the viability of this agreement.

“We want to say frankly that these voices are a call for war rather than for peace.”

The US president says he is cautious about raising expectations over a ceasefire, which the main opposition group has yet to agree to.

However, he maintains that any progress could lead to a political process to end the war in Syria.

Not suit your agenda Erdogan.

GOOD.

Er dog an aptly named. He is he'll bent on war and has little regard for anything other than building his own wealth.

That it will benefit Assad the most is true. So what's your point? You think it's better that Syrians go on in fear, starvation and death so that your agenda is served. What a wonderful alternative. Thanks for that insight into your world view.

bigots point is; a truce serves Assad to keep his power and bloody regime so do Russia.

it is not a full truce and still allows bloody Assad regime powers and Russia to arrest therefore kill opposition. It is not stopping the blockades as well and it just allows humanitarian relief to pass.

so of course it is benefiting Assad and it will make Assad's bloody regime more powerful and that means ISIS will stay there longer and war goes on.

Your understanding of a highly complex situation and some very personal agenda driven machinations, particularly those of the non democratic free speech suppressing expansionist war monger Erdogan is breathtakingly banal.

Do you think he really cares about anything other than his own expansionist ideas and family wealth?
