Visa Run KUALA LUMPUR

Featured Replies

Hello everybody!

I know there's lots of topics about visa runs but I have been surfing online for the past 2 days and I just got more confused.

It looks like the visa rules change quite often.

Anyway here's my story. I'm leaving Thailand monday next week (29th) and will fly to Kuala Lumpur. I will stay there overnight and then catch a plane on tuesday to re-enter Thailand. I had a proper 2 months tourist visa stamped on the first of january, which expires next monday.

I got a bit concerned about my plan as I keep reading things about those visa runs. Will I be able to get 30 days when re-entering Thailand? I think it's also good to mention that I'm French (G7 countries).

I would really appreciate some help!

Thanks

You will get 30 days.

Did you know that you can visit Immigration in Thailand and get a 30 day extension. 1,900 Baht.

Yes I know, I just thought it would be a good idea to have a short trip to KL and check out the city :) Plus the flight I got was so cheap!

I'm planning to stay in Thailand until june so after those 30 days, I think I'll get a proper visa.

Thanks a lot by the way! Such a relief...

You can also get a 30 day extension of the 30 day entry you will get at an immigration office.

Sweet! I'm going to Koh Phangan, is there an immigration office there? If not I guess the nearest one will be in Surat Thani...

What exactly do you have to bring? Tm7 form, pictures, copy of your passport? It's good to know!

Nearest Office is on Samui.

Ok, can I get this extension anytime during the 30 days?

You can apply for the extension during the last week of the 30 days.

TM7 form with a 4 X 6 cm photo attached. copy of passport photo page, entry/permit to stay stamp and TM6 departure card.

Ok thank you very much, I have all the answers I needed!

Have a nice day :)

KL horrible, horrible place.

KL horrible, horrible place.

That is just your "opinion" one that many would not share.

He was probably referring to the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, if so based on the many reports including own experience it is a horrible place in the sense you don't get your SETV. And for other type of visas you get all sorts of complications.

The staff is also rude.

As for KL in general, not my cup of tea but some may love it. Why, I don't know.

The suggestion from 4evermaat was that you get your "proper visa" in Penang, not Koh Phangan. It's not a bad place and I agree much better than KL. Kl is very crowded and the person I've encountered in past is not helpful, sometimes rude.

You might also consider Savannakhet, Laos.

First rule of visa runs: Use Thai Consulates not Thai Embassies.

Second rule of visa runs: Refer to rule one.

KL is an Embassy.

Third rule of visa runs, follow technologybyte's advice above :)

Some Embassies may have had a lighter approach in the past at least for singles of whatever type, but times are changing.

The general rule is: Thai Visas are obtained OUTside thailand.

Extensions of Stay are obtained at local immigration office INside Thailand.

KL seems to be unfrendly towards non-Malay residents in issuing Visas. You may certainly visit the KL city, but for the Thai visa take a coach bus ot train to Penang.

Yes but it that case, I'll just get 30 days when re-entering Thailand from KL. When I'll get a longer visa extension, I sure will go and get it in Thailand (Koh Samui).

I've always heard bad things about embassies and I personally got my first visa at the Melbourne Thai consulate. It was really quick and easy!

I think some people need to go back and read the OP. He is just doing an out and back for a new visa exempt entry not applying for a visa at the embassy.

Yeah I was starting to get confused again haha.

Anyway always appreciate some help, it makes things clearer for the thai visa conditions

Yes I know I just happened to find myself there for business reasons back in 2014 so i thought why not give it a try. I would have thought at a time when Vientiane was issuing double entry tourist visas based on just an application form and a photo, that KL would not be so difficult for a single entry tourist, particularly when I was backed up by a foreign bank statement and an exit ticket. But no, I had to be "working for a Malaysian employer". If foreign employer, bring from there. I was like....what? Surely if I was to go through the hassle of getting that, they would have probably said: go to your Embassy and certify it.

I mean i understand Embassies are stricter than Consulates, but their requirements were outrageus (at least at the time).

So yes since 2014 I haven't stepped in any other Embassy around SE Asia.

Never think to apply for visa at KL, Thai embassy and stuff there are the worst as many of my friends told me, as well heard in this forum, to visit KL for the re-entry is ok, but really a boring city (for me) comparing to Bkk.

good luck !
