Thaivisa members, a reflection of expatriates here ?

I'm sorry I didn't catch how long you have actually lived in Thailand.

The country on the onset for me was rather seductive.

Affordable independent living...no need for roomates...hot young party girls...easy to find work...and I mean...BANGKOK. the mystery the legend the exoctic allure...all temptations satisfied...

Indulgence...

Ya the people are friendly...its awkward acceptance...the food is good....

Its a tropical environment....

Clubs...bike rides...hanging out...always surrounded by dates and chatting girls up....

But...after awhile...a few coups and insurrections and military junctas...internet connectivity

Problems....police checks...lies...idiocy...gren jai...face culture....xenophobia...and the simple fact you are entirely on your own if things go upside down...koh tao...lack of justice....

No English...at all...

It went from feeling like an adventurous rockstar to feeling like an antiquated leacher and outsider over the last 6 years....

Unfortunately I cannot recommend the place to my friends to go...I feel ashamed of the place and fully advocate the #boycottThailand movement simply as a way to strike back against the empire that is screwing those B2 boys over.

I am on holiday now back in my home country...and it's so nice.

My family....all my accomplished friends doing great things...intelligent conversations...

The superficialism in thailand and incredibly different set of priorities...education...economic set up...values morals and ethics...

Driving styles...libel and defamation laws...corruption (which is kind of cool if you can make it work for you) weird electrocution deaths...thai people always saying mai dai! Mai dai! When it is totally dai if they open their minds to logicical reasoning and efficiency....which they don't....

I mean...

I will be back next month ONLY for my gf and only to close up shop and move on to a more advanced society of free thinkers with intellectual integrity and economic opportunities. My girlfriend makes 9 dollars an hour. Wat da faaak????

I love you Thailand...like a pair of worn out boots or some sexy jeans that have become too tight....

So the the G/F makes $9/ 315 Bht/ hour ? She must be a well educated lady with a very good job,

Are you sure she will earn $90/hour in your advanced society or will she be lucky and be paid $10/hour?

I believe you are looking at a particular sector of the Expat community.

There are a few industrious individuals, who make being helpful here appear to be a vocation.

And a segment of the Expat community with too much time on their hands, likely bored.

Idle hands are the devil's workshop.....

Some find distraction in generally attacking the host country and it's people, others find it in attacking them!

It should not be taken too seriously.

Great source of information and experience as well.

9 bux a day sorry an error...10 bux an hour would be 8 times what she makes now...and that excites her. Edited by fireplay

No, not a true reflection and ,yes, you are reading too much into the topics and comments.smile.png Then again what do I know, I have only been living here for forty years and don't hangout in bars.coffee1.gif

You may indeed be the exception. It has been my experience that many expats suffer from unfulfilled dreams. Too many have overestimated their ability to live as they want on their finances, found themselves cuckolded by their women, and lost their ability to improve their lot. Combine these issues with Thais not acting as the expats expected, and you have disgruntled, pessimistic, and unhappy campers.

i really dont see what "hanging out in bars" has to do with much of anything, or even what it means.

i have only half your time here and have certainly had my share of cocktails.

i most certainly frequent bars, most people do have a drink from time to time. I did back in the other hemisphere and i cant see why i wouldnt here.

there is something unpleasantly puritan about the way you put it.

Geez, are you deliberately being disingenuous? It's pretty clear what VF is saying. It's not about visiting bars, even frequently. It's about having your life revolve around the bars and the people who work there. It's about your entire knowledge of Thais and Thailand coming from bargirls and their friends, who are easily the most non-Thai-like of all Thais. Nothing puritanical about it.

I think the OP is merely asking whether the majority of expats outside of TVF are also haters, bashers, doomsayers, whingers, moaners, self-righteous moralists, cynics, naysayers, harpies, curmudgeons, brown envelope bots, tea money choristers, professional victims, deathwatchers, poor-mouthers, finger-pointers, conspiracy theorists, handwringers, busybodies, know-it-alls, blowhards, scaremongers, Dudley Do-Rights, Nervous Nellies, Goody Two-Shoes, ace asphalt/drainage/driving/parking/traffic/tunneling/concrete/urban planning experts (to mention but a few), real estate appraisers, 99 percenters, schoolmarms, cupcakes, pissants, etc. (see Thai Visa Brigades). He considers himself, perhaps legitimately, one of the blessed elite minority of objective, dispassionate, nimble observers who

unfazed by the mess and paradox one may naturally expect to encounter in a Third World country.

I lived in Thailand nine years, started getting tired of its b.s., then tried Mexico. I could NOT get back to Thailand fast enough!!!!

There are many folks here (both the forum and Thailand) that grow bored, and as such look for something to whinge about. Lord knows I was certainly one!!!

I've been back for two days. licking my wounds and thanking my lucky stars I am back.

What I appear to be detecting however from certain responders on this topic is a sense of latent aggression/hostility....take from that what you will

Well of course you do, it's called confirmation bias.

You focus on views that support your point of view and ignore those that offer a more complex or ballanced point of view.

There is a certain irony in that.

I am aware of the concept of confirmation bias, and would love to debate you on that very topic, but alas I have to run as being picked up for dinner shortly

been interesting reading some of the remarks and I will add further comment at a later stage...

You: "joined Thaivisa a few months back in the hope of obtaining relevant information about life in Thailand"

I guess you managed to get all the information you needed without having to ask any questions, because this is the only topic you have started, the only question you have asked.

Looking at your previous contributions you don't sound at all like someone who lacked "relevant information". You seem to be quite confident in your knowledge of "life in Thailand".

You're starting to look a bit:

Interesting so you stalk people as well in real life ?

forgive me, but I don't understand the relevance of your comment about hanging out in bars ?.....If I have misunderstood and your a recovering alcoholic, then I have to commend you on your will power to stay out of bars, overcoming an addiction must be very difficult

I was mildly interested in your OP and planned to follow this Thread on occasion.

However your comment on " villagefarangs' " contribution is simply mindless and has absolutely no relevance to what he wrote.

You clearly have an "Agenda" and I have no interest in contributing further.

Patrick

And what would that agenda be then, i responded directly to a comment the poster made, and it appears i may have misunderstood what the poster was referring to thats al...so please enlighten me...the premise of the thread hasnt changed

We all love a good moan, i do.

It isn't perfect here, but nowhere is, certainly my home country isn't. But you got to admit that the thais do and say some really weird shit, that makes you scratch your head and say "whaaaat?"

bless them.

It's a reflection mainly of a small subset of expats. It really isn't representative of the full spectrum of expat life at all.

i [not so] humbly beg to differ. ten years of Thaivisa forum gives you a rather good idea of the spectrum's range.

Really, though?

I mean, there are barely any women posting here, or people under 40. How can that be representing the full range of expats.

25 years visiting numerous times as tourist plus 11 years resident in Thailand gives me the right to claim that the number of women and young people is negligible as far as this topic is concerned.

I think the truth lies in the middle, the number of women and young people is not really negligible, but for some reason, they don't post much on TVF.

Perhaps they have better things to do ?

I am not blaming anyone.. smile.png

I believe you stated this -----------

"I think the truth lies in the middle, the number of women and young people is not really negligible, but for some reason, they don't post much on TVF."

You have clearly missed the many complaining posts from "digital nomads" who believe they should be given a "special visa" smile.png

it's a logical conclusion that women and young people don't need the information and advice a forum offers. both groups know already each and everything.

why should they post? coffee1.gif

I don't think the posters on TV represent a good cross section of expats in Thailand. Just as a test of that, how many here live in Nichada Thani? How many here actually know what that is or where it's located.

That is the expat community that is not represented here.

The ones living a sad existence in the arse end of nowhere you mean.

Telling us all how wonderful life is in Thailand living next door to your ageing mother and father in law and 300 cling on's.

Give us a break.

Or in this instance living in a Farang Ghetto.

Exactly. There's a whole community out there of educated professional types happily making a life for themselves and their families in Bangkok that don't seem to be represented at all.

Never lived out there as I never had school aged children in Thailand. Also, unlike those that do, I no longer work for a living. Bit laid up at the time, so have come back to posting on TV for a while.
