Friend has an eye infection. Where to go?

Recommended Posts

Perhaps the Eye doc, along the waterfront in Nathon .... ? I just tried to find the link with the photo of the place and phone number... But cannot find at the moment!

Blue awning usually hanging down over the front... about 2/3 down the road... I will try to find pic in the morning!

I suffered eye infection in both eyes for over one month and went to a half-dozen clinics and hospitals during that time. The symptoms were like conjunctivitis X10. Very miserable. It began to affect my work (editor and lecturer).

I finally gave up, and traveled the 450km to Bangkok's world-class Rutnan Eye Hospital. I took all the meds with me that I had been using.

The specialist examined me in less than 2 minutes, took note of my medication, and explained to me that all the other doctors had been treating me for a bacterial infection. However, the doctor said this was a VIRAL infection. If I had waited much longer, I would have experienced irreversible damage to my eyes.

She prescribed the appropriate medication, and in 24 hours, I was experiencing relief for the first time in six weeks, and all symptoms disappeared in less than a week.

I learned two important lessons from that experience. When it comes to your eyesight...

#1: don't let any problem drag on

#2: go to the best you can afford (including travel time and costs)

Good luck and lick this problem quickly!

Specialist advise should always be sought if an eye infection (particularly if bilateral) does not resolve within two weeks.

Whats wrong with your nearest doctor. I have a very good one at Maenam almost opposite the post office. He is only open after 5pm as he works at Naton hospital all day.

Not for me and I don't have a doctor anyway.

Started while she was in Korat 2 weeks ago. Got some meds from the local hospital and it is just getting worse as time passes. I'll send her over to Nathon ASAP to the place in the picture above.

Cheers guys.

If it still exists !

Better go to the nearest Government Provincial Hospital who will have eye specialists on staff.

They don't have an eye specialist at the Government hospital here on Samui, and have not for at least two maybe three years now....

That's the government hospital I mentioned above ^wink.png

Got worse again and she had still done nothing about it so last evening I went down to where she works and spoke to her boss and workmates while she was not there. When she did turn up they all went off on one about turning down free help which was both funny and also a little sad. We all know about face here in Thailand and having to be very carful about it but sometimes it does come in handy. To top it off I handed her 2k and told her in front of everybody to go over to Nathon to the place in the picture Jim posted and if she needed more then just ask. By this time I had already shown that this was an offer I had made a week ago. At the time of the thread starting actually. I shamed her into getting her eye fixed and also flipped the face aspect because she will lose face if she did not.

Got three pictures today of various medicines via FB private message which was nice until I noticed later that a bag in one of the pictures had a Lamai address. I don't have to give a <....> but I do, so sent her to the best place I could find while paying for it all and it is not in Lamai. She said she went there because the place in Nathon is closed until Wednesday. I'd already said to everyone that I wanted bills and proof to her boss etc. and she knew I would ask so after she sent a video of her and friend driving into Nathon. The blind was down so she did go.

Being the <magic word> I am I didn't leave it there and asked if the same issue was diagnosed. No, previous one was a stye while now it is an allergic reaction to chlorine. So I asked why she thought this 'eye doctor' is correct and she said because her eye feels better. Asked how much and was told 980 so then told her to go to Nathon on Wednesday and get a second opinion as she still had over 1000 Baht to play with.

Xanalin is an antibiotic but it will not assist with an allergy (if one exists)

I have no idea what the plastic bags contain but would guess they contain pills of some description

I this does not settle soon the lady should consult a specialist on the mainland.

And remember -- its her eye and her responsibility to seek treatment, if you wish to fund her then OK but she is entitled to care from the Government hospital.

I'll tell you what I remember. Been here since '99 and I have seen too many people go into a Thai government hospital and never leave. A very old joke here is along the lines of 'go hospital same same go see Buddha' or 'we so poor that next time sick not go see doctor, go see Buddha'. Standing joke.

I flipped it anyway so now she will lose face if she does nothing about it! Hence even video proof on demand.

Well I can't say I agree with the Thai's don't like the Government hospital, there is usually a long line up the every weekday!... I use it fairly often and find them very efficient in processing people though and finding the right specialist when needed to refer too... and I would say most leave alive!

I think your friend may get referred to an eye specialist in Surat Thani, if needed ? Having said that, there are some doctors there that come in once a week or so , for specialist treatment. (last I asked there is not an eye specialist on staff)....

You, and other people I know, have often given praise to the hospital in Nathon so maybe it is down to a deep seated irrational distrust of hospitals in general... but all this is by the by if they don't have an eye specialist on hand. There is also the question of lack of inquisitiveness on behalf of the patient along with a reluctance to question anybody (doctor) because they may lose face..... 'allergic reaction to chlorine' she was told. From where I asked. Swimming pool she told me. You have a swimming pool in Korat? No, she informed me and went on to add that her eyes were red before she left Samui. Oh right. Did you go swimming just before you left? No, many months ago. Don't know about you Jim but the diagnosis does not sit well with me for some reason.

Have you considered that your friend may, not, in fact be telling the whole story?

Unless you were present at the time of "diagnosis" and were informed by the Dr. what it was then what you now relate is just hearsay

The vast majority of allergic or infective eye problems resolve within two weeks often without the need for treatment.

As I have said before if the eye is not responding to treatment a specialist opinion is needed.

Indeed. I can't force the issue except to create a situation where she will lose so much face that doing something is the only option. Can't claim poverty because she and everyone she knows know that I will fund it.

Lose one and you lose stereoscopic vision which means distance becomes a pure brain function.
