Thailand Wants Missile System for New Patrol Vessel
By Prashanth Parameswaran

New vessel to be equipped with the Harpoon surface-to-surface guided weapon system, a navy spokesman confirms.

BANGKOK: -- A new offshore patrol vessel on order for Thailand’s Navy will be equipped with a guided missile system, a spokesman confirmed this week.

As I reported earlier this month, the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is set to get a second offshore patrol vessel (OPV) in two or three years following the finalization of a new contract between Thai shipbuilder Bangkok Dock and British defense firm BAE Systems.

The 90-meter OPVs are highly versatile ships which can be employed for various functions including the management of exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and disaster relief.

Submarines, patrol boats, missile system. and yet the country is parched of water with many areas

facing critical water shortage, does the government invest in water resources managements?

No, the above toys are much more important for the generals to show around.....

a government will look at many different things at once. The Army under government orders has been digging ponds and boreholes all over Thailand in the past year. Obviously there needs to be an official statement concerning Songkhran excesses.

Apart from Thailand, the vessel has also attracted interest in Britain and also in Brazil which took delivery of three OPVs from 2013 to 2014.

“With three of these ships already in service in Brazil and a further three Offshore Patrol Vessels under construction for the UK Royal Navy, our design continues to attract significant interest internationally,” Nigel Stewart, the commercial director for BAE Systems’ Naval Ships business said.

Simply Not true! The army has done nothing for the people other to control and intimidate them.

REALLY! You must not actually be IN Thailand then.. The Army has helped rebuild Phuttamonthon park. It has dug ponds and prepared monkey cheeks. It has also dug/bored water holes for local municipality offices to use.. Certain departments of the Army have also tried to do what you said as well...

The Harpoon system is an excellent (expensive) bit of kit, ideal for engaging the fast, large sophisticated and powerful warships which...which... no one has got in the waters around Thailand.

They sure are spending big on military hardware, for a country that has never really been at war,

Luckily, they couldn't possibly handle such a loss of face by losing a war.

Why would anybody invade Thailand?

I doubt the WW2 Gestapo could make them change their ways.

It's a wholly unfeasible idea, but the generals want their boondoggle.

No need for any outsiders to rape & pillage Thailand. That's a job reserved for Thai's.

cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif the best laugh I have had for well over half a century ...these """"""""" cant even control the Blimp down southblink.png

Hopefully they learnt their lesson on the blimp and this time will not select the optional extras of electric seats and surround sound instead of puncture repair kit and footpump.

they (the Thais ) already have Harpoon missiles installed on some ships. What's the point of having a ship like this that isn't protected.. None at all.. What's the point of learning a new missile system. None at all.

All you Americans (and a lesser extent British) should look to the billions spent on weapons systems, some which never see the light of day due to incompetent stratagem by your own countries.. At least Thailand don't try and destabilize foreign countries (they just stick with their own)

Agreed.

The Thai military is too preoccupied with destablizing Thailand with coups to turn its attention to foreign countries. wai2.gif

There you go then a positive! Unlike the USA who have managed to cock up the world with regime destabilization wars and rebel interaction via the CIA.
