UN approves harsh new sanctions for North Korea

NEW YORK: -- North Korea faces harsh new sanctions after the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution drafted by the regime’s closest ally China.

The sanctions aim to cut off funds for Pyongyang’s nuclear programmes, as the United States Ambassador to the UN explains:

“Yet, we’ve got to be honest that while previous multilateral efforts, including the four previous sanctions resolution by this council have undoubtedly made it more difficult for North Korea to advance its nuclear weapons programs, the regime continues to plow ahead, as it demonstrated the last two months,” said Power.

The measures follow Pyongyang’s nuclear test in January and a rocket launch last month. The regime said it was a peaceful satellite launch.

All cargo going to and from North Korea must now be inspected.

Previously, states only had to inspect shipments which were reasonably believed to contain illicit goods.

Has what North Korea allegedly done any worse than what the US has been doing around the world for the past 100 years? Why are there never any sanctions against the US or other Western countries other than Russia? Is it because the US and EU are the UN?

Do some serious research on North Korea. Then come back to us....

Seoul: North Korea fires short-range projectiles into sea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's Defense Ministry says North Korea has fired several short-range projectiles into the sea just hours after the United Nations slapped sanctions on Pyongyang for its recent nuclear test and long-range rocket launch.

The North's launches also come shortly after Seoul approved its first legislation on human rights in North Korea

The South Korean bill's passage was ahead of the U.N. Security Council unanimously approving its toughest sanctions against North Korea in 20 years.

A total of 212 South Korean lawmakers voted for the bill and 24 others abstained in the floor vote. It becomes law when it is endorsed by the Cabinet Council, considered a formality.

North Korea's state media has warned that enactment of the law would result in "miserable ruin."

How long have sanctions been in place already, Earth to UN

I wonder what poking a rabid dog with a sharp stick will achieve.

I wonder what poking a rabid dog with a sharp stick will achieve.

Justification to kill the dog, I guess?

A dog with rabies cannot be cured. Given the risk of inflicting harm and/or transmission to innocent victims quick and humane euthansia is justified. Poking with a sharp stick is just dangerous entertaiment.

Further sanctions won't make one iota of difference. It will further entrench them. However let's all go on anti - DPRK overdrive and pretend our Western leaders are not systematically hacking away at our rights, healthcare, pensions and social security, all the while telling us we have never had it so good.
