Police, teens in stand-off at Khao San

BANGKOK: -- The deployment of about 100 police officers to halt water splashing on Khao San road early yesterday almost led to violence as drunk teenagers resisted.

Pol Maj Ekkachai Chaicharoen, Chana Songkhram police station's inspector for suppression, said 100 police officers was sent to Khao San road before midnight on Thursday to tell teenagers, mostly Thais, to stop splashing water to allow the city's Public Cleansing Department to clean the street for the first working day after the Songkran festival.

Some drunk teenagers refused to stop, shouted and threw things at police and also told their friends to oppose police.

It took almost an hour for the police to convince the teenagers to end their Songkran celebrations. There was no use of violence and no one was arrested in the incident. He refused to confirm reports that the angry crowd broke the window of a television broadcasting van, saying no complaint was filed.
