Tipping for 1 drink

Recommended Posts

Your last sentence had a bit of nastiness about it, I don't mind having a debate and do respect your opinion.

This debate is over.

What I meant was that if you are not happy with the price of water in the bar, buy it in 7-11 (or Tesco, where it's even cheaper) and drink it in a public space

If you don't want to pay for the services of the bar, then don't. But don't expect to avail yourself of their services for the same or similar price as a convenience store or supermarket.

SC

No you didn't mean that at all. What you meant to do was try to belittle possum1931 just as you tried to with me.

People like you with your wild tipping have contributed to the worsening of atmospheres and service in bars. <deleted> you are already paying a premium say 80b for a beer in a bar so you should rightly expect something in return for that. Make them earn a tip, don't throw it at them regardless otherwise you will and are killing the fun that once was in Pattaya bars

Believe me it does go into a pool.I had a bar for a few years, and its standard practice. The lady drinks are listed in a book and every girl that gets one is given the money for herself, but tips are shared among the staff.Did you really not know that?

I dont tip unless i get my nuts felt.
Well,in answer to a previous post about cheap Charlies. You are one.You wouldn't last long in any bar.You would be labeled as a CC and pretty soon, the girls wouldn't come near you.

I bet you don't buy many lady drinks do you?

Point taken, Dave, but common practice or anything masquerading as culture doesn't make it right for me. When I give a waitress B20 for good service at my table, to then share with five or six others means she/he gets less than B4 from me which I see as an insult. I didn't get my good service from everyone, only the one! Yes, I realise that four other customers doing the same means she gets her B20.

Did you ever notice that some of your staff got more tips than others? If I was a Manager I would want to know. I am a man of fairness.

It seems to me that shared "tipping" has become a means to subsidise low wages and is being exploited by Employers, especially at the 20% rate in USA

In the future I will leave no tips.

I am aware that this reply and many others are a little off topic as it doesn't relate to tipping for one drink. and has become a general tipping matter discussed many times on this forum

I normally tip minimum 20 baht. Just paid a bill now. Had 3 drinks. 2 customers in the bar including me and 2 servers. Had to wait for every drink after I requested the bill they forgot to bring it. Bill was 390 and I gave them the ten baht change.

To be honest with you Dave, I rarely go in bars these days and when I do, you're right, I hardly ever buy a lady drink and certainly don't leave 40 baht tips after drinking 1 beer so if that makes me a cheap Charlie then so be it.

Too be perfectly honest, I dont want the girls anywhere near me, they are nothing more than serving wenches, their job is to bring me drinks when I order.

I dont want to listen to their Thai man no good BS, I dont want to hear hansam man crap, I dont want to hear the disgusting language they use, I dont want to hear their pasat talung, hoi jokes etc etc.

Lady drinks are for mugs.

I can than think of at least three bars off the top of my head where you will never hear such crap.

I could also name at least half a dozen others in Pattaya where you wont be subjected to this crap.

At the end of the day, if you choose to drink in a clip joint, expect to be ripped off and hassled by panhandlers.

No wonder these dives now lie empty, eff them, bad attitude, bad service, we didnt all rawk into town on the banana boat.

If these serving wenches were really worth their salt, they wouldnt be working in some back soi in Pattaya, they would be in Ratchada in Bkk.

There is one bar I use in Pattaya, the serving girls must be at least 40 years of age, no hassle, no BS, they do pretty dammed well on tips for the reasons mentioned.

They are there to serve, not pester customers.

I'll tip for good service. I don't tip for poor service, and I don't ever go back because the odds are your food or drink could have some unpalatable additions.

Tipping originated in America, where the minimum wage is so lousy for some occupations it's almost mandatory if the worker is going to make a living. I'm just wondering if Donald Trump leaves a tip.

Correction, tipping was established in Europe in the seventeenth century. It did not reach American shores until the late nineteenth, when it was introduced by wealthy travelers to show how cosmopolitan and educated they were.

I agree that there is no set percentage here in Thailand. I am still working on the inflation from the ten percent I was instructed to observe as a youngster in the US.

Here I have been trying to educate myself via my girlfriend, who maddeningly will suggest an amount from zero to ten percent, with no explanation except for the zero, which is usually at a minimal service type establishment. Sometimes it is "Up to you". I hate that saying! I ask because I am a stranger in a strange land.

I have settled on about 10% as a maximum. Some places it is zero because of indifferent service. I cannot help but wonder if this is caused by the CCs who, observing many Thai people not "having the habit", are all too happy to comply.

If you have resources to compete with the upper middle class or hiso crowd I think it is pretty low to not show appreciation for good service. I certainly do not condone rewarding surly, indifferent effort.

Always.I tip 20 baht even if i only have one drink. It makes for a nice Sawadee krap when i come back on another night for a few more. All these tips do add up as the op said. The tips go into a pool and are shared out at the closing of the bar.I tip accordingly to the amount i drink.Usually 10/15% of the total bin.I dont begrudge 20 baht for a one drink.

If I suspect that the money I give for PERSONAL service goes into a "pool" to be shared later with those who don't care about decent service then nobody gets anything, good service or not!

Yeah. Then why don't you just give it to the service-person personally; or does that not give you a reason to avoid tipping?

Tired of all the Cheap Charlie accusations. What about all the CC employers??? These clip joints here change as much and usually more for beers/drinks than in the States and elsewhere, yet pay the staff shit for wages! Prices have doubled and tripled here but employees see none of it. Instead the blame is misdirected at the customers for not drastically over tipping. Over it!

Couldnt have said it better, what about these cheap chalee employers and their stunts.

How about, watering the drinks down, how about whats on the label isnt what you are drinking, what about the short measures?

Pay your staff decent wages and they wont need to panhandle and drive the customers out the door.

I can name at least half a dozen places in Bkk/Pattaya where none of the above happens, places are full every night, I wonder why?

Lets not mention the scams involving the cashier etc.

If I order a Jack Coke, I dont expect to be palmed off with a 3 day old bottle of flat coke that you bought from 7 for 27 baht..

Great to see these CC employers crying into their watered down Chang, som nam na.

What makes you think his family are in a hurry for him to die?

Because they were probably brought up to be as greedy as him.

So purely speculation, tinged perhaps with partisan resentment? I don't think you should allow that sort of petty grudge to influence your view on drink pricing and bar economics

I just hate capitalism, this may sound contradictionary, but I suppose it's OK up to a point.

Capitalism is the corner-stone on which pensions are built. Without the ability to derive income from your savings, through return on capital. Socialism, with its principle from each according to their ability, to each according to their need, turns the elderly into dependant beggars, forever living on the scraps that the working population choose to leave for them (or alternatively, blood-sucking leeches, sucking the prosperity from the working man).

Socialists of today rely on capitalists as their tax base, and paradoxically, could not fund their welfare dreams without other people (the wealthy) to fund them.

So enjoy your water, and if you're not happy with the price of it, drink in the street

SC

This is nonsense. Under Marxism, if your efforts when you were of working age were subsidising those who couldn't work (both the elderly and also children) and then when you can no longer work the next generation subsidises you and this continues for every generation, then this is balance. Calling it leeching just shows your lack of intelligence and obvious bias.

I think it shows that there are more old people for the same working population to support now, than there were forty years ago. My grandmother was quite lonely when she celebrated her 80th birthday, My parents were not.[/size][/background]

Actuarial mathematics has its limitations, from its assumptions. Time invariance is an assumption that is wrong, and currently favours retirees over contributers, for those schemes that are defined benefit, rather than defined contribution.

Rookie question. A few expats tell me to give money directly to waitress in her hand and she keeps it. Leave tip in tray and it goes to all the staff.

I asked a go go waitress who I know and she said all tips in her go go to are divided regardless of how you give the tip.

Anyone know the truth about tipping the girl directly or not.

I would guess that every place is different, but in general if you give directly I would think they would keep it.

i ask because i like to go from bar to bar and have a quick look and a beer. kind of pub crawl

No need to tip.

The Japs don't and they're respected here in Thailand more than you'll ever be.

If you need to ask this question, learn the difference between being liked and being respected.

what would you say is the difference between being liked and being respected?
