BANGKOK: -- More than 400,000 AIS customers could be cut off from using its services on Tuesday after regulators ruled the company needs to close its 2G cellular service.

AIS, Thailand’s largest mobile operator, has been forced to migrate almost 13 million 2G subscribers after it lost out to rival True Corp in December’s spectrum auction.

Since December, the company has managed to convince almost 5 million subscribers to switch to its 3G and 4G services, while AIS has agreed a deal that will enable 7.6 million of its 2G customers to use DTAC’s 2G network.

However, AIS announced yesterday that 400,000 subscribers have still not been migrated and could face being cut from midnight on Tuesday.

Late on Monday, AIS executives sought to obtain an injunction from the Central Administrative Court in order to allow the 400,000 subscribers to continue using the 2G cellular service.

How would i know if i am still on 2G and among the 400,000?

Dial *570#, should tell you the status of your SIM. Depending on the phone you may also have to replace this.

*570# results for me in; Your SIM card is ready for AIS 3G 2100 upgrade.

I guess that's fine. In the city I'm connected to 4G. At least the status bar of my phone says that.

Dial *570#, should tell you the status of your SIM. Depending on the phone you may also have to replace this.

Thanks, it said go to AIS Shop.

So you are one of the 400k :). You probably need to go to a flagship store (Central usually have), not Telewiz, they are just resellers.

so, if the phone says sim card ready for ais 3g 2100 upgrade do i have to do anything??

Same message on mine. Hope you get an answer. My phone is 8 years old. Don't fully understand all this stuff. facepalm.gif

It should tell you under network settings.

You need to contact AIS and they will put your sim card number on a waiting list to be upgraded. When it has been upgraded you will receive a message. The message will tell you where you can get a replacement phone I think, my wife who enlighten me speaks English little bit.

Nope, Telewiz gave me a new sim and a new free phone last week.

What does that means if I am not using Internet and just use my phone for phone calls ?

If the phone is only capable of 2G....

Go to AIS and trade the old phone in.... I know someone who paid only 100 baht!

For a bit more you can get a 4G capable phone.

And the 100 baht is given back as a credit on your phone account.

Don't forget to take your passport, they want to see that.

I forgot to say (duh) that the trade in gets you a 3G capable phone for 100 baht.

(Do you get credit as well making it completely free?)

They must be very keen to keep their customers.

Ok, had problems with them previously for the registration as they had no access to the AIS database. Maybe changed now. Good to know.

They all have some promotions for new phones now, check out the next 7/11. You just need to put a certain balance on the card to get a new phone. But these are all lousy phones, Lava is made in India.

Agree, it is not greatest phone around. It retails for about 900 baht and considering I traded in a 20 year Nokia and got a Lava for nothing I was pretty happy. It will be my spare phone when my android has its usual nervous breakdown.

What do you want for nothing?

They put a new sim in my phone yesterday and I am still getting that message on keying in *570# ~ "sim card ready for ais 3g 2100 upgrade"

Questioned it and they told me to try this number - *545#

This certainly states a 3G connection now.

Just got my new phone from AIS. Wife got it outside the 7/11. She gave them my old phone and 100 baht and they gave her a new phone. 3g, but no wifi on it and the camera isn't very good, but what do you expect for 100 baht? Still it has tetris on it. :)

My wife also got herself a new phone from true. 90 baht, similar to my phone 3g, no wifi, etc. Anyone else get a new phone lately from either of these telecom providers? Anyway just updating everyone. :)

Every time I call *570# I get the message 'Error performing request Unknown Error'

Anyone know what that means?
