BANGKOK:— A mentally unstable woman held her family hostage for four hours wielding a metre long sword in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police called to the two storey terraced townhouse in Khlong 3 of Rangsit outside northern Bangkok, were finally able to rescue the woman's 52 year old father, ten year old child and two year old relative as worried neighbours looked on.

The drama unfolded in the darkened house as "A", a name given by police, swung a "sparta" knife after having threatened passersby outside the house. Relatives had failed to calm her down and the father had suffered an injury to his right side.

Finally after several hours "A" had calmed down sufficiently and police were able to retrieve the knife and give the injured woman first aid.

The father said: "My daughter has a history of mental illness going back several years. She had got medicine from a hospital in the north but it had run out and the symptoms had intensified."

All concerned were taken to hospital nearby and doctors were evaluating "A" so that there would not be a repeat of the incident. No charges were laid.

Poor girl. Mental health services are not widely available in Thailand, and many relatives do not get the proper advise on how to care for relatives with a mental illness.

Happy that everybody got out of it relatively well - I hope the father's injuries are not too serious. Hopefully she will now continue getting (and taking) her medication.

I had to google sparta knife - those look really scary.

Luckily she is in Thailand. In some places in the U.S., at the very least, she would have been tasered.

And then shot.. just to be sure cheesy.gif

But must say the police did a good job.

In Australia she would have been shot. The police there have killed many people who need help. Thee minute they see the knife they say they are threatened and shoot. They wil not wait, they will not backoff and let things calm down it all has to be over in one minute.

The cost of medicines for mental illness can be very expensive in this country and judging by the house they live in they probably don't have a whole lot of extra money laying around. Times are getting tougher for many people and her medicines won't be covered by the 30 baht health care scheme.

,,,reminds me of what my father-in-law said about my wife....'She has been like that from very young'.....

...somehow that is a justification.....???

...how many more....as long as they 'get their way'......

All medication for mental illness is totally free at Thai public Hospitals.

All Public hospitals have a section dealing with psychiatric issues however they are generally staffed by GPs and Psychiatric Nurses.

Thailand does have a shortage of Psychiatrists.

THere are several dedicated mental hospitals for patients in need of more intensive treatment. The care in them can be surprisingly good and most of their patients can exit to the community with medication adjusted within a few weeks.

Fair play to the officer who persuaded her to give it up. He seemed genuinely concerned later on in the video.

That one officer brought a mop to a swordfight in the video!
