Monks Alms Route

Hi everyone

I was wondering if someone was able to tell me where the best places to see the monks on their morning alms routes were? I am staying on Khao SAn Rd, so preferably somewhere close to there.

And also, what should I give them?

And I know that women are not allowed to touch monks or pass anything directly to monks, so how should I give the food to them? I'm travelling on my own, so can't bring a male with me.

Thanks!

Sally

at the top of khaosan rd there is a temple Chan Songkhram and at the end of the thanon Rambutri (by the Banglampoo market) there is a major wat called Bowonnivet. You have to be on the street at the sunrise - monks walk on the streets untill they get enough food for the day.

It's more of an intention than what you are going to give, food being the most common gift - but there are shops which are selling goods for monks, you can buy the whole lot, they come in an orange plactic bucket.

The last time I was in a touristy area in the morning I bought some alms from ye olde alms table and put them in the bowl because, hey, I had a flight to KL later that morning. When I started to turn to carry on with my day, the monk mumbled "give money" under his breath and pointed to the bowl. I was hungover and taken aback, so I put a 50 baht note in the bowl and chuckled. I can't speak for everywhere in Bangkok, but most places I've been you don't need to go looking for them, just walk out your front door. Be sure to take some alm money, heh.
