Belarus promote economic ties with Thailand

BANGKOK, 17 March 2016 (NNT) - His Excellency Vladimir Andreichenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, met with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to strengthen relations between the two countries.

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) had previously invited Mr. Andreichenko for an official visit to Thailand. Deputy Government Spokesperson Maj Gen Weerachon Sukhontapatipak, the Prime Minister and the House Chairman had an opportunity to discuss future cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, education, culture, research and development.

Gen Prayut urged Belarusian entrepreneurs, who accompanied the House Chairman on this trip, to invest in Thailand. Mr. Andreichenko also views Thailand as a major ASEAN partner nation and will welcome Thai investors to Belarus. The Prime Minister also said that Thailand may need tractors and other machinery from Belarus to industrialize the country's Special Economic Zones.

The two nations have enjoyed diplomatic relations for over 24 years. Thailand expressed support for the establishment of Honorary Consuls of the Republic of Belarus in the Kingdom. The House Chairman's visit will come to an end tomorrow.

Good thing. I am sure Belarus and Thailand can find many things in common.

Lukashenko can probably give some good advise on how to stay in power. Belarus has also done quite well with restrictions on political and civil freedoms, freedom of speech and the press, assembly etc. They are a Tier 3 country as well, where Belarus has excelled in slave labour in state enterprises, students are forced to do unpaid farm labor and military conscripts are forced to perform unpaid non-military work - so perhaps some ideas for Thailand to do on this part?

Without wishing to be cynical, this government seems to be utterly desperate for any form of direct foreign investment and looks like it is scrabbling for any crumbs it can pick up.

Elections under Lukashenko's rule have been widely criticized as unfair by the international community; and according to many countries and organizations, political opposition has been violently suppressed.

Western countries have described Belarus under Lukashenko as a dictatorship. The Council of Europe has barred Belarus from membership since 1997 for undemocratic voting and election irregularities in the November 1996 constitutional referendum and parliament by-elections.

The country relies on Russia for various imports, including petroleum.

My thoughts also. Sounds like a name for some medication. But Wikipedia says it's a small European country with almost a 10M population...about the same population size as Bangkok. So many little countries and city-states in the world now days.
