US Degree certificate attestation

Featured Replies

HI all,

I have a job offer from a company at Bangkok and currently living in India. As per the visa application docs, degree certificate has to be attested.

I have got a USA educational degree and would like to know the process to get attested

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Where are you applying for a visa at that has that requirement. Most places do not even have a degree listed to a apply for non-b visa.

You could do an affidavit at the US embassy if you are a US citizen or resident. You would be doing a statement that it is true and correct,

Hey ubonjoe,

Thank you . I will be applying at Chennai Thai consulate and an Indian citizen.

I will get in touch with the Thai consulate and US embassy for further information

As said a degree is not usually required for a visa application.

Are you an Indian National?

Did you study in the USA ?

sunnyjim5,

Yes I am an Indian national and studied in USA.

Seems to be a latest update from the Thai Embassy that newly employed applying for B (Employment) visa has to get their degree attested.

Degree attestation is also required as a mandatory document as per this

The list of required documents on the VFS website is confusing. http://www.vfs-thailand.co.in/Chennai/pdf/Checklist_for_Business_visa_Employment_purpose_080216.pdf

"*11 Degree certificate attested by MEA for an applicant who is newly employed"

And then

"Documents of the applicant must be self-attested"

ubonjoe,

Ya it is confusing and not much help talking to them as well.

Probably means that obtaining the attestation is up to the applicant.

At the US embassy website in the UAE it states:

We strongly encourage U.S. citizens to authenticate their documents (especially educational, marriage or birth) in the U.S. before coming to the United Arab Emirates. The Embassy is unable to authenticate documents originated in the U.S. The process for authentications / attestations is not quick, please plan accordingly.

Presumably this is a standard State Dept policy. If they won't do it for US citizens, I doubt they'd do it for a non-citizen.

When I was applying for work in the UAE I had someone in each university's admission & records office notarize my transcripts and send them directly to the employer. Each transcript contained a notation of each degree awarded.

The only entitly that can truely attest a degree certificate is the institute/school were you did your degree

Wouldn't the official copy of your transcripts from the University suffice? They show the degree awarded and date. Official copies can be mailed directly to recipients without going through your hands, and many universities have online access systems set up.

UK universities can be checked online for example. Only problem is the school/company checking it's authenticity has to pay 2.500 Baht and have the said person sign a release form.

So, 'some' embassies' will attest to have seen your degree but that's it. They're not saying it's real. They're saying they've seen it.

As far as I know, the US embassy doesn't offer this service. One American girl I know had her degree verified by a notary in Bangkok.

I think it all comes down to how much sway your school has. The process is never black or white.

You apparently failed to read my first post where I wrote this. "You could do an affidavit at the US embassy if you are a US citizen or resident. You would be doing a statement that ii is true and correct,"

I am fully aware that US embassies and consulates will not authenticate any document.

ubonjoe, a bit offtopic, where do I authenticate the US birth certificate of my child? Which authority in NY?

He'll be my dependent living here in Thailand and the immigration at CW requires the birth certificate to be authenticated.

Immigration will accept a self certification done as an affidavit at the US embassy that it is true and correct.

It is a long procedure to do it otherwise. See: http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/notary_authentication.html

Thanks a million. What's the process to do the affidavit thing at the US embassy in BKK? I just turn up there? Do I need to take my new born child? I m not a US citizen myself. What documents would I need to do the affidavit?

Not sure they will do it for you since you are not a US citizen You would need to contact them about it. An appointment is needed to do it at the embassy.

You own embassy should also allow you to do the statement as a self certification.

I sent a mail to thailand embassy asking if US degree attestation is necessary and got a reply that only the indian undergrad degree attestation is sufficient . US degree attestation is not necessary.

Thank you all for your valuable suggestions.
