NARATHIWAT: -- Fourteen men have been held in military custody under suspicion of involvement in the temporary seizure of Cho Airong district hospital on Sunday March 13 and using the hospital’s staff and patients as a shield to attack a paramilitary outpost near the hospital.

Pol Colonel Krisana Pattanacharoen, deputy spokesman of the National Police Office, said on Friday that the military was confident that the 14 suspects were involved more or less with the incident after having examined video footages at and around the hospital and having checked whether the weapons used in the attack of the ranger unit near the hospital matched with those used in other previous attacks.

He said that the military was also checking whether any of the 14 suspects were wanted by the military and the police for previous terror attacks.

The 14 suspects are held for questioning under the Martial Law.

About 50 insurgents were believed to be involved in the daring seizure of the Cho Airong district hospital. They later attacked the ranger outpost with automatic gunfires and M79 grenades wounding seven rangers.

The incident has drawn condemnation from human rights advocacy groups.

What have the human rights groups got their knickers in a twist over? They should go to Brussels and try to get some sympathy there. How many thousand and counting here now? Maps are always being redrawn. Smile and learn to live with it or move south and be genuinely happy!

You and Deerhunter may have totally missed missed the point being made about human rights abuses..

The UN Human Rights Office for Southeast Asia and other human rights groups condemned the insurgents for targeting and using the hospital for military purposes. Hospitals, medical units and medical personnel are protected under international humanitarian law.

On the flip side the Thai military may have endangered the hospital by placing a paramilitary outpost next to the hospital.
