Public Health Ministry warns people over diarrhea during summer

BANGKOK, 28 March 2016 (NNT) - Permanent Secretary of the Public Health Ministry Sophon Mekthon is urging the public to consume cooked and hot meals, as the number of diarrhea patients during summer is on the rise.

A nationwide survey, conducted during 1 January to 21 March 2016 by the Bureau of Epidemiology, is showing that the number of diarrhea patients had risen to 245,988 throughout 78 provinces.

The Ministry of Public Health has issued guidelines on health, suggesting against the so called half-done boiling method, especially on foods such as pork, chicken and eggs.

The ministry has warned against the consumption of food that has been left-over for more than four hours after cooking. The public should reheat the food before consumption.

And just how are the people supposed to know if the food has been cooked for more than 4 hours since there is NO regulation nor standards to be met when operating one of these businesses.

Also, what a stupid claim about reheating their food. If bacteria has already begun then warming their food will not make it better and will not kill any bacteria. Only recooking may do this if it's cooked long enough and hot enough.

And to think, this release was given by the Health Minister. Disgusting!!!

So many problems with food handling techniques, washing of hands after the use of toilets

many people do and many people don't,

it is getting caught using the handles on doors

that are never cleaned and the good old money passing on germs,

Cooking what you need only eat FRESH,

would be a more appropriate statement,

More government verbal diarrhea.

Hygiene when preparing/ serving food is virtually non existent here.

Warning about eating food within 4 hours, how many street vendors sell food within 4 hours?

Non thats how many.

On saturday pickup going around our village selling canum chin (noodles)

Old pickup falling apart, driver dirty clothes.

Wife stops him, he gets out of pickup, large basin on the back, he puts his dirty hands in grabs a handful

puts it in a plastic bag, hands it to the wife, hand in pocket for change, no attempt at hygiene whatsoever.

Later wife asks darling you want some, no way it has been on a pickup all day and filthy conditions.

This morning !! guess what?!! wife has got the runs.

Later wife is eating some and asks darling you want, no bloody way.

In Thailand this malady is normal to all except the very careful households and even they eat out on the streets sometimes.Watching my girl friends and her friends cooking and eating, I sometimes wonder just how they keep from spending a few nights in a hospital .When my sister was visiting here I told her and my brother-in-law to only drink bottled water. After eating on the street she pointed out that the vender was washing out the bowls with tap water. When asked why, I had no response except to say that is how it is here.

A good story to add to your book if you ever write one. Thanks for the laughter.

Prevalence of foodborne pathogens in retailed foods in Thailand. Abstract

The consumption of foodborne pathogens contaminated in food is one of the major causes of diarrheal diseases in Thailand. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and types of contaminating bacteria in retailed foodstuffs in Thailand. Food from four categories (137 samples total), including meat (51 samples), vegetables (38 samples), fish or seafood (37 samples), and fermented food (11 samples), was purchased randomly from seven different open-markets and seven supermarkets in Thailand from August 2010 to March 2011. Seven types of major foodborne pathogens were identified using conventional culture methods. Approximately 80% of meat samples tested was contaminated with Salmonella spp. In contrast, the Salmonella spp. contamination rate of vegetable (5%) or fermented food (9%) samples was comparatively low. Six strains of Cronobacter sakazakii and two strains of Yersinia enterocolitica were also isolated. A substantially higher rate of contamination by Bacillus cereus was observed in fermented food (82%) than in samples of meat (2%) and fish or seafood (5%). Seven Listeria spp. isolates were obtained from meat and fish or seafood samples. Approximately 39% of samples tested were found to be contaminated with Staphylococcus spp. (54 isolates). The rate of bacterial contamination of meat did not depend on the type of market. However, the contamination rate of Staphylococcus spp. in vegetables was higher in open markets than in supermarkets, and the contamination rate of Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus spp. in fish or seafood samples purchased in open markets was likewise higher than in those purchased in supermarkets. Therefore, improvement of hygienic practices throughout the food chain may be required to reduce the risk of food poisoning.

However not to worry if the bugs don't get you one of the many pesticides will.

In China they were using Lindane on Tomatoes, probably here too; main use of that chemical I thought was to kill pubic lice?

Whilst on this icky subject why do Thais , including my wife put spoons , knives and forks into a container handles first ? If a fork is needed it gets lifted out of the container by the prongs , this is mostly at folks houses not so much noodle shops where knives, forks and spoons are in flat containers . I asked the TW and she said it is how things are done here. Cut meat , take money then lift out a knife for you by the blade , disgusting .
