Gusty weather helps disperse haze in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, 28 March 2016, (NNT) - The haze situation in Chiang Mai province has improved, following gusty weather conditions.

Officials said that although the capital district of Chiang Mai is still blanketed by thick haze, the overall atmosphere has considerably improved from the last four days. They attributed the improvement to windy weather conditions, which helped to dissipate the smog. They also indicated that the reading for particulate matter of 10 microns in diameter or smaller (PM10) in the province is 100 micrograms per cubic meter, falling just under the threshold for public safety.

Nonetheless, the Chiang Mai administration maintained its warning to locals, recommending they avoid outdoor activities, especially exercise. Local authorities have encouraged residents to wear face masks when venturing outside, until the situation improves.

Officials suggested that small children, senior citizens, and patients with chronic diseases exercise caution regarding their health.

* It's Big C Intersection on the Hang Dong Road. Taken either when it was worse, or when zooming in really far. Pro tip for smog photographers: use that zoom.

* The article is correct, end of last week was really bad, but it has improved since then. (I came very close to going on holiday)

Wednesday 23: 100 ug/m3

Thursday 24: 130 ug/m3

Friday 25: 187 ug/m3

Saturday 26: 111 ug/m3

Sunday 27: 94 ug/m3

Monday 28: 87 ug/m3

Tuesday 87 ug/m3 (until 2pm)

(Daily average PM10 at the Mae Rim Station)

Comment: this doesn't mean it's the end of it. It can and will fluctuate over the next week or two.

'... Officials suggested that small children, senior citizens, and patients with chronic diseases exercise caution regarding their health.' A pity the administration is so incapable of exercising the law. A durian jam-style fine and jail time would prove a wonderful deterrent.
