Azzumsavnac Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Were flying to NZ with our Thai Daughter who still has 4 mths in her passport.NZ visa no problem. Stamped and ready. Now Malaysian air say her passport is less than 6 mths and wont let her board.... If we're just transiting KL airport should that be a problem?
steve187 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 does your daughter only hold the one passport a new passport will be required if the airline are saying she can not travel on the one she holds
Azzumsavnac Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 Only the one, and were flying tomorrow from Phuket to Auckland via KL for a couple of hours. While dealing with the NZ visa system, they have no problem with it. Its when we started checking in on line this happened... yikes..
laolover88 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Transiting is not the issue. Presume she is trying to leave Thailand with less than 6 months validity on a Thai passport? That is a problem. Get a new one! You fly MAS? After everything? Dio Mio!

Open the link and complete the form(s) Print the result and use it if Malaysia prove to be "difficult" at check in. You may need to speak to a Supervisor. http://www.iatatravelcentre.com/ edit Added the link !
laolover88 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2013/jun/20/passport-expiry-dates-blank-pages Looking at the web I think MAS are wrong (and anyway it appears airlines don't have a clue) The 6 month rule appears to apply to the country of entry NOT the Country of departure or transit. You may have to fight your corner! Do you have documentary evidence that NZ is happy? Good luck
johnatong Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 NZ Visas confirmed and stamped. As already advised. Open the IATA link I provided, follow the process and print the outcome. You may have to check in at the airport. http://www.iatatravelcentre.com/
laolover88 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 NZ Visas confirmed and stamped. Cannot then see why MAS unhappy. I suspect ignorance and incompetence. Is the 4 month remaining the only issue or have they raised others? Unless MAS have some small print you have missed about "all passengers must have 6 months validity to board" they are wrong. Fight!

steve187 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 the problem with the airlines is that they will have to pay for your flight home if entry is denied, so they are unwilling to take any chances edit speeling

ubonjoe Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 This from the following website that is also has info from the IATA but is easier to use and has more info. https://www.klm.com/travel/kz_en/prepare_for_travel/travel_planning/travel_clinic/visaform.htm Malaysia (MY)Admission and Transit Restrictions:- Non-machine readable passports are not accepted.Visa required, except for Nationals of Thailand with a normalor temporary passport, or:TWOV (Transit Without Visa): This for New Zealand. Passport required.- Passports and other documents accepted for entry issued tonationals of Thailand must be valid for a minimum of 1 monthbeyond the period of intended stay.
Bantex Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 A lot of countries stipulate that travellers entering that country must have at least six months remaining on their passport regardless of country of issue. Airlines are aware of this and don't want the expense of having to fly the passenger back and sometimes being fined. I am aware that a lot of countries will allow entry with less that six month validity on passports, but the airlines are lazy and don't to keep checking, they do not want to make a mistake due to a country changing its entry rules.

I am aware that a lot of countries will allow entry with less that six month validity on passports, but the airlines are lazy and don't to keep checking, they do not want to make a mistake due to a country changing its entry rules. Wise travelers ensure they always have at least 6 months validity on their passports. However, the IATA database is available to all (including the airlines). It is easy to check and if a airline proves "difficult" a simple request made to a check in supervisor for the database to be checked should remove any problem.
CNXBKKMAN Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 When your passport gets to the stage where it has only 6 months validity left its time to be getting a new one if you want an easy life. The airline staff can check what validity you need for your destination. Just prompt them to check if they are quoting wrong info.
Azzumsavnac Posted April 4, 2016 Author Posted April 4, 2016 No problems checking in, and whistled thru immigration. Touch wood....nok nok.
