Three Children Drown over the Weekend

Two girls in Pursat province and a boy in Kandal province drowned on Sunday, according to local police. Deputy police chief Soley Mesa said the girls, aged 8 and 10, were bathing on a boat on Sunday afternoon in a tributary in Veal Veng district’s Thmada commune, when the boat became waterlogged, causing the pair to fall in the water.

“The two girls went there to take a bath and have fun together on a boat in Kheav’s tributary that was close to Thmada waterfall at about 1:30 pm that day,” Mr. Mesa said. “The boat flooded suddenly and the two disappeared. Then people started to immediately search for them, but unfortunately they were dead, and it took one hour to find their bodies.”

Mr. Mesa told Khmer Times that the girls’ bodies had been returned to their families for funeral arrangements. On the same day, a 12-year-old Kandal boy drowned in Muk Kampol tributary in Sambou Meas commune while giving his dog a bath. Muk Kampol district police chief Yeun Sarat said the boy and his 7-year-old sister tried to stay in shallow water as the boy did not know how to swim.
