More than 400 workers from the Dae Kwang Garment factory in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district gathered in front of their factory demanding their salaries and benefits after the factory’s Korean owner shut down operations without paying workers on April 10. Chum David, president of the Peace Union for Workers, voiced his concerns about the factory’s financial situation in light of it closing its doors.

“We think that the employer of Dae Kwang Garment factory is bankrupt because they did not pay salaries in March and several days in April to the workers,” he said. Mr. David said he is trying to find a resolution for the workers by asking the Minister of Labor to intervene by selling the factory’s equipment and giving the proceeds to the unpaid workers.

“I will try to meet with the owner of the Canadia Industrial Park to help the workers as well by asking them to take the money that the company booked with them for renting the building to pay to the workers,” he said.
