Thailand and U.S. to expand economic ties

BANGKOK, 19 April 2016 (NNT) - Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn will travel to the United States to attend the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) from April 20 - 22.

According to the Commerce Minister, her visit to the U.S. will serve as an opportunity for the two countries to discuss the possibility of expanding bilateral trade, investment and economic ties for the first time in 13 years.

The Commerce Minister is planning to push for duty-free exports of Thai coconut water and travel products to the U.S under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program. The GSP extended coverage to Thailand until 2017.

The U.S. also wants Thailand to serve as a hub of alternative energy investment in ASEAN. Mrs. Apiradi forecast exports to the U.S. to grow by at least 3% this year, once the GSP has been approved for more products from Thailand.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn, be careful with the Americans. The person you talk to might not be there in 10 months, and all agreement will be off.

The USA is not like Thailand.

As for the USA, they should be imposing sanctions against Thailand to force an end to this coup.

Un like Thailand the President doesn't run congress or the country and policy is set by congress the president is just a person who tries to set a direction for the country to move toward nothing more he has no war powers. It is the party in charge who either approves or disapproves yes the president can veto or refuse to sign into law but that is it. But wanting duty free exports while not willing to offer same in return will get you nowhere. Thais can buy and own property in the US American citizens can't do same here Until that changes expect nothing. Oh yes we can buy condo but house and land it sits on NO. Own a business without thais having some control over here not happening.

Perhaps I'm mis-reading, the article seems to be using words very carefully, but:

Thailand and U.S. to expand economic ties

Is not what the article seems to say, rather that TL is going to the US to ask for more trade.

Perhaps I misunderstood.

Reading the headline it seemed like it was already done......

but after reading the article i got the message....... just like the man said..... "I have a dream......."

"The U.S. also wants Thailand to serve as a hub of alternative energy investment in ASEAN. Mrs. Apiradi forecast exports to the U.S. to grow by at least 3% this year, ."

The headline makes it sound like expanding economic ties is all but a done deal...but the article says it's just a visit by a bureaucrat to attend a meeting (and probably a side trip to Disney Land also). I just love National News Bureau of Thailand articles.

Good luck. Be sure to buy a tee shirt as tangible proof you were there.

Don't be ridiculous. Thais take pictures to prove they've done things. There'll probably be hundreds of pictures of people their thumbs up and selfies where you can just make out the edge of the White House.

I even had a picture taken by staff in Tesco as I paid for my first car insurance.

Evidently you know nothing about the USA President's "executive order" powers.

Unfortunately, you are right. Just once I wish the USA would put aside the need to be constantly chasing the almighty dollar, and act for the greater good.

Record trade agreements 1 year after the coup and now this.

Of course I was belittled, bullied and called names for even suggesting that trade would be open between the US and Thailand.

Business as usual even if it does not suit the narrative of some.

News FLASH .... Thailand won't get 3% export growth to the US with tariff-free low value coconut water and "travel products."

And as mentioned whatever export trade advantage Thailand gets with the GSP ends in 2017 - coincidentally the same year Thai elections are scheduled by the junta.

The real export action for Thailand is in TPP that has been recommended by Thai exporters and DPM for Economic Affairs Somkid. But for some unexplained reason Prayut has refused member application.

Oooh the sweet irony...

First the economy is at its worst.

Second, and here is all the fun is, espcially for someone who hate Thaksin : youlte basically praising the Economy Minister... guess who was hired, the very same one the Red put in charger during the shinawatra government... funny no? You hate them all, but yet you live in the north and praise the guy who was appointed by the reds....

GSP was extended in 2015 until 2017. Old news and totally has nothing to do with this article. It's just spin for the masses. However being in tier 3 of TIP report along with no democracy and being China's puppet, I don't see an expansion after Obama is replaced.

You hit the nail right on the head. What exactly does the U.S. get in return for granting free trade favors to Thailand? Allowing expats to own land and residential homes would be a good place to start. Also, long term visas (i.e. 5 years) rather than 12 month extension of stays; annual reporting rather than 90 day reporting; no customs fees for items brought into Thailand from the U.S. by expats. The list goes on. They can keep their discriminatory pricing to national parks if they like.

Are there Americans who work in the U.S. embassy. I know the cashier didn't know what a Susan B Anthony coin was, had to go ask someone. What do they do there? When I went their in the past, it felt like I was dealing with Thai and not Americans. You know - the My Die worker.

Trump needs to close that whole complex on wireless down, move it to a building in klong too-ey. For all its wonder service, and appointment system, shakedown detectors.

A paycut is in order too.

Expand trade? Trade what? Hard drives? Autos? Thainess? pathetic

I'm not a political genius by ant means. And a lot of you guys are,and i like to read and try and learn. But can someone enlighten me on this.

USA,the land of the free.

USA who fought against the tyranny of Great Britain, and won (twice)

USA the land where any child can grow up to be president

USA 'give me freedom or give me death'

USA the country that fought a civil war that resulted in more Americans dying than in all the other wars put together, for the freedom of Black slaves.

The USA that opens trade with a country that is now living under a dictatorship that enforces suppression of the media, enforces a Hitler/Stalin,regime.That threatens its political opponents with 10 years in prison for non agreement of its charter. That forces people into 'readjustment of attitude' camps. That dismisses crimes against women out of hand. That allows'Elite' families to commit murder and get away with it.A country that is now completely under military rule.A country whose government (that is illegal) is frightened of its own shadow.

All i want is some understanding and clarification of what the f##k is going on?

Please advise. This post is in no way meant to be sarcastic or clever.I just want to know.thank you in advance.

If you are going to the U.S. Embassy to talk Susan B. Anthony coins I would recommend you instead join a coin collectors club. Maybe Donald can recommend one.

You misunderstand- Should they accept u.s. currency at the U.S. embassy. Maybe you can get the mint to make a Hillary coin for you.
