Yes, indeed the numbers are still up for debate. Personally I think the leftwing German author Fritjof Meyer made a persuasive case for 500,000 in OstEuropa. Of course there were lies told about the Holocaust. Just think lampshades, however, ultimately it did happen, and whether 4 or 6 million or 2 million died, is not really going to change that. If you want to know the truth about the holocaust, you have to read the transcripts of Irving's London trial. In the closing statement Irving said: "I have always accepted that Adolf Hitler, as Head of State and government in Germany, was responsible for the Holocaust. I said, in the Introduction to my flagship biography, Hitler’s War (this is a reference to the 1991 edition): If this biography were simply a history of the rise and fall of Hitler’s Reich, it would be legitimate to conclude: “Hitler killed the Jews”. But my years of investigations suggested that many others were responsible, that the chain of responsibility was not as clear cut as that. " ...but I now continue with the various narratives of the Nazi shooting of the Jews in the East. There is little dispute between the parties on what actually happened in my view. This is the shootings of the Jews in the East by the Nazis and their collaborators. Of course, I do accept that there were gassings on a small scale at Auschwitz in the buildings identified as bunkers I and II which were houses which have since been torn down." https://www.hdot.org/day32/# So Irving did accept that gassings did happen at Auschwitz, his contention was that more people died from natural and other causes, not from gassing. All the transcripts from the trial are in the above link. They contain a superb summary of the holocaust, as the team led by Rampton assembled a 20 man expert team to rebutt Irving's claims.
