BANGKOK: -- More than 700 homes in five provinces in the North and the Northeast were damaged after summer storms lashed the areas this week.

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Chaiyaphum, Loei, Mukdaharn, Buriram, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Chiang Rai were hit by strong summer storms since Tuesday.

One woman was reported to be seriously injured when she was struck on the crash helmet she wore by lightning while riding on her motorcycle in Buriram.

Witnesses said she stopped at an intersection as thunder storm began lashing the province.

She was rushed to Buriram hospital where her condition was described critical.

The storms destroyed over 700 homes, and caused damages to public utilities.

It said local authorities were rushing first aids to affected areas and were inspecting and assessing the damages in order to allocate assistance funds under the Ministry of Finance’s regulations.

The department said the summer storms and hail storms will persist a few more days until the high pressure blanketing the areas will ease.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday expressed concern over the extensive damages caused to homes in rural areas by summer storms.

He ordered all relevant government agencies to urgently assist affected, said government people in the provinces affected by summer storms and strong rain storms during this period, said government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd yesterday.

He said that the premier also suggested all sectors store water as much as possible for consumption and farming after heavy rains fell in many provinces.

There has been a little wind but no rain, so where they get the idea that storms are reeking havoc in Issan I don't know.

yes those "well constructed" village houses sure didnt cope well with a bit of wind.

Talk about stating the obvious from the PM

Lot of rain, lot of powerful wind, thunder and all the rest. Can't find the cat.

Most of the carnage could have been avoided,,,,IF,,,,There was a Building code/regulation in place and policed by Competent Government building Inspectors/Engineers,,,But It Ain't so,,,It's their own stupid Fault,,, wai2.gif

We've had big storms in Chaiyaphum province from about 3 PM onwards for the last 3 days, got a good one going right now, Im quite surprised that the electric has held out today, it was off for 5 hours yesterday... & while my & most of the better built village houses are ok, a few have lost some or all of their roofs...

But the trouble is who is going to pay for decent standard housing? & who is going to police it? properly policed you would make a lot of homeless people.... All for one moth of the year? never going to happen....

It was very localised. Some incredible rain and hailstones in Buriram.

Hey ! The previous post about the geezer on the bike asleep , he was struck by lightning .

Just had a nice little storm in Sangkhom, Nongkhai. High, gusting wind accompanied by a solid downpour with a little hail. Most importantly though, it dropped the temperature several degrees.
