How many more times?

BANGKOK:-- Another rogue taxi driver in Bangkok was caught on tape trying to fleece a Thai woman with a foreign husband.

But the clip on Facebook led to him being hauled before land department officials after thousands saw his unpleasant behaviour online deemed hurtful to Thailand's image, reports Thairath.

Result: 2,000 baht fine and no licence for three months.

The clip of pink taxi driver Denchai Thiamthat trying to fleece a woman called Pornpan Pokhakorn was posted on the page of Feldmann Bee and was viewed and shared thousands of times.

Denchai had driven Pornpan and her foreign husband to the Four Wings hotel in Sri Nakharin from near the smoking area at Don Muang airport. He had not indicated he was not using the meter and after a short while demanded 900 baht for the journey.

An unpleasant journey followed after the passenger said she would only pay 500 with Pornpan saying that she felt they were in danger and threatened by the driver's behaviour.

When they reached the hotel things didn't improve but hotel staff intervened and she paid 500 baht for the journey.....and posted her views and experience online.

Land department officials soon got wind of it and fined Denchai 2,000 baht and took his licence away for three months. Land department spokesman Sukree Jaruphoom said that Denchai would have to attend training in providing a proper service and that any further infractions would mean the loss of his licence for good.

Don't really know DM that well but are taxis supposed to pick up from the "smoking area" there?

No they're not, that is meant to be a controlled area to stop taxis from dropping off and picking up on exit by-passing the taxi queues. The method is generally used by taxi drivers without permission to pick up from the airport and cheap charlies wanting to save 50 baht from the taxi rank.

The normal excuse from these people is to avoid the queues, which, depending on the time of day do form. However, it has been my experience that these queues move pretty rapidly and the waiting time isn't really that long.

I use the taxi rank at DM a lot, probably about 20 times a year and have never had a problem with any of the drivers from the rank, 50 baht well worth paying.........................wink.png

Thailand used to be my favourite destination and was once my home. I tired of all this type of nonsense long ago. When I visit now I pay B1200 for a limo into town, none of this sort of unpleasantness. The way he kept advancing aggressively to the young lady, they should have given him a lifetime ban on that evidence alone.

To the potential critics - no I'm not wealthy and don't have money to burn, however an uneventful journey is worth the money. When I think of all the money I spent on 'entertainment' in my younger years, B1200 is a pittance by comparison.

All that said, as always, one man's meat.......

The vid was doing the rounds on Facebook yesterday, I too was surprised at his aggressiveness when considering this was at the hotel lobby, with people around. You can imagine how this could escalate if occurring in more quiet areas. This is actually an aspect of such price-gouging that we don't normally consider much, the often accompanying threats and intimidation, which is unpleasant for anyone but especially tourists in a foreign country.

Thanks for that. I travel in from Swampy. I'm not saying money is no object, but when I think of the money spent on wine, women and song back in the day......

they usually bait like that before you get to the destination. it gives them time to decide wgat to do if there is a problem when your dropped off and asked to pay.

also, for the courageous, no fare showing on the meter means no service was rendered and nothing due (does not apply to tuk tuk or other vehicles that do not have a meter).

guess the youtube blocking is not working too well these days. this guy is easily recognizable. defamation at its best.

this guy was told by hotel staff to sit down like a dog and instead he tries lunging and being aggressive. should have castrated him!

When he said the meter was not working they should have told him to stop and got out. I had one taxi from DM who said the meter was not working so I told him I would pay him as the sign said at the airport i.e. meter plus baht 50. He suddenly fixed the meter

If it were any other country I'd say "I can't understand this" .....

He's breaking the law.

He's demonstrated that he's unfit to be a taxi driver.

His attitude and behavior are not acceptable.

Only a three month ban ........ incredulous!

No, he told them 900 baht at the airport. She agreed. Then when she got there, she changed her mind and said she will only pay 500 or call the police.

Usually passengers must wait downstairs and cue for taxi. Those taxis are always on the meter.

But some like to jump the cue and go upstairs to arrivals and negotiate with the taxi by themselves. The passenger enters a verbal agreement, or decline and get another taxi.

She jumped the cue, and reneged on her agreement. As she admitted in the video. We as customers do not have to get in an unmetered taxi. We can get another. It's his taxi, he can negotiate what he wants. Negotiated taxis are all over the world. It's no different from negotiating a tuk tuk.

She did not keep her agreement and should be arrested.
