University professor hacked to death in Bangladesh

NEW DELHI (AP) — A university professor on his way to work in northwestern Bangladesh was hacked to death Saturday in an attack similar to other killings by suspected Muslim militants, police said.

A.F.M. Rezaul Karim Siddique was attacked on the way to the state-run university in Rajshahi city, where he taught English, deputy police commissioner Nahidul Islam said. The attackers used sharp weapons and fled the scene immediately after, Islam said.

The attack was similar to recent killings of atheist bloggers in Muslim-majority Bangladesh by radical Islamists.

No groups have claimed responsibility for the attack and police are investigating.

His brother Sajidul Karim Siddique said the professor was a "very quiet and simple man," focused on studying and teaching. He led a cultural group and used to edit a literary magazine.

"So far as we know, he did not have any known enemies and we never found him worried," he said. "We don't know why it happened to him."

Over the past year, several people including atheist writers and publishers have been killed allegedly by Islamist groups.

The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been cracking down on militant groups, which it blames for the deadly attacks last year on secular bloggers, minority Shiites, Christians and two foreigners. It accuses the opposition of supporting religious radicals in seeking to retaliate against the government for prosecuting suspected war crimes during the country's 1971 independence war.

Some of the attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group, but the government dismisses those claims and says the Sunni extremist group has no presence in Bangladesh.

At least three other professors at Rajshahi University have been killed in recent years allegedly by Islamist groups.

If he was a Muslim murderer being ill treated, Amnesty Int't would waste no time accusing the government of mistreatment. As it stands, Amnesty has not come out yet in defence of this moderate, poor chap....

The professor was murdered by extremists not the government.

Amnesty Int does not get involved in civil cases.

Amnesty Int does protest against government torture & violence no matter what the religion (if any) of the victims is.

Hatred tends to cloud one's judgement.

"Religion of peace"

There is no evidence it was done by muslims. Did Christians or Scientologists never kill anybody before? It feels so wrong to write that even though it is so PC. Yuck.

less than 1 percent Christians in Bangladesh and Scientology is really not a thing there. There is 9% Hindu there, so it's a possibility. But since Muslims are really covering the leader board in the killing innocent people in horrible and barbaric ways these days. I'm gonna go with my gut on this one and call it another Islamic inspired murder.

Prove me wrong.

Is ANYONE truly surprised? Canuckamuck said it brilliantly above...but didn't really have to go out on much of a limb or even rely on his gut. We all KNOW who and what is to blame almost every time we hear about this barbarism in the 21st century. Anyone who says otherwise is being disingenuous. These murders in Bangladesh have nothing to do with the USA or outsiders or the Western world. These are superstitious lunatics murdering freethinkers, academics and other educated people of their own nationality because they have a different point of view. The Quran says to slay infidels. They are following the batshit crazy dogma of their superstition. bah.gifpost-4641-1156693976.gif

BS comment by you, only posted to encourage generalised negative responses concerning all Muslims. The murder has now been claimed by Daesh.

Bangladeshi government executes convicted Islamist terrorists, of whom four had the death sentenced carried out in 2015.

Sad for nations like Pakistan and Bangladesh, this Wahhabi-inspired stuff was entirely foreign to them up until very recently. Must be more scary for the majority Sunni population of Bangladesh to know the fundamentalist butchery has reached their doorstep.

Sad how ignorant Westerners assume this issue is all about them and their freedoms. Not much justification for killing in the Quran, sorry, but plenty found if you indoctrinate people from the Hadiths... anyone know what they predict? Then, why sponsor it word for word.....

Yes it does. If there were no religious scriptures (fairytales) to follow, or if they were discarded as irrelevant and outdated by an evolved human mind, there would be no ridiculous justifications for such actions.

Sure, there are non-religious killings. But they are harder to justify or find mass support for than religious ones.

Few people understand what that phrase, according to its derivation, really means, which is "the religion of security (for its adherents)". Anyone who threatens the solidarity of the group (such as atheists and the free-thinking west in general) threatens the security of the group and must be done away with.

To combat these assassinations it is necessary first to address why Islam feels so insecure. Tension breeds insecurity which breeds (self-protective) violence in a vicious cycle. It is therefore necessary to reduce tension, and as always, it should be the stronger side to do that first.

The root of the problem seems to be traceable to the emergence of Israel (combined with the recent globalisation of information). The first step to alleviating the problem is therefore rapid recognition of a Palestinian state. That would give some pride back to Muslims in general and make them feel less threatened, significantly reducing global tension.

I am available for the position of Secretary-General of the UN.

Where did you get that information/translation? Can you read Arabic?

Non-religious killings are harder to justify? Really? How so?

Please review the history of Gengis Khan, Nazism, Stalinism, communist China under Mao, and racist genocide in Rwanda. Please estimate the total millions massacred.

Then, please amplify your statement.
