Twelve loggers were arrested on Saturday while harvesting timber illegally inside the Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary in Pich Chreada’s Pou Chrey commune, according to a local media report.

Tieng Saorath, the provincial deputy police chief, confirmed the arrest. However, he declined to give details, saying: “It’s the job of the environment department. Please contact them.” Provincial environment department officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Local media reported that officials detained 12 loggers, all from Kratie province, and seized several pieces of luxury beng wood, motor-carts, axes and machetes as well as a mobile phone during the arrests. All 12 loggers were sent to provincial court on Saturday.
