Australian part-owned Chatree gold mine prompts protests in Thailand after poisoning claims
By South East Asia correspondent Liam Cochrane

BAN KHAO MOR: -- It has all the hallmarks of a classic Western — farmers in cowboy boots fighting against a big gold mine, led by a gruff-talking Australian boss, in the dusty heartland of Thailand.

But the struggle over the Chatree mine and its impacts on local health really comes down to a lack of clarity in Thailand over what levels of naturally occurring toxic substances are considered safe.

Australian company Kingsgate Consolidated owns 48 per cent of the mine. Chairman Ross Smyth-Kirk said he was frustrated the debate over alleged contamination could hamper the company's efforts to extend their mining license, which expires next month.

...always 'the others' to blame....

Thais are very much into protecting their own interests something that western Governments should do butwont due to fear of the PC fools.

This an example of why most western companies are wise enough to stay out of investing in LOS.Once the company has a huge investment running and the business starts to produce revenue and the Thais think that they can run the business ,somehow the western company finds that through corruption and bribes they are no longer permitted to be here..Check out the Carlsberg mess with Chang beer, or the Thaksin deal with the American many years ago(how he got his first million $.)..

thai owns 52% but try to blame the part owner with less say, the thais run the show so they simply do whatever is cheapest and produces the most profit for them but then let the fault fall on the part owners that do not have the ability to over ride the decisions made by the thai majority owners, typical really. The thais cause the problems then to save face blame everyone else, wonder if we will now see the aussie company have their share in the company taken from them so all the profits stay in Thailand.

Methinks the 52% would like the other 48%.

Yeah Right! Who and I mean not THAIS but actually WHO owns the other 52%??/

I think you would be really amazed to see that the same people who own SCB and Thai airways??? Methinks...

It's Part owned by Foreigners So Thais are the Blame They have the Say,,,Not the Foreigner,,,No they blame the Foreigner if something goes wrong,,,,Thainess at it Worst,,,,Just Shows the Real Animal. bah.gif
