But I am alarmed again about growing xenophobia here and beyond.”The Brenner crossing links Italy and Austria with a multi-lane highway, a dual carriageway and railway tracks.Italian protesters clashed with Austrian police on Thursday, a day after Vienna passed some of Europe’s toughest asylum rules.Italy’s Prime Minister Mateo Renzi will discuss the issue with the EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Rome next week. -- (c) Copyright Euronews 2016-04-

jaidam
This is getting ridiculous. I have said a million times that if Germany throws away all laws pertaining to the movement of young male muslims there will be trouble. So now, Germany did scrap most laws as regards this social segment, and now Austria is building a border fence. Predictable and totally obvious and there is a danger that by continually removing common sense thruths about the situation that some people will claim to be surprised and that "nobody warned us, how were we to know?" Shocking really.
mrwebb8825
This is why the EU should be disbanded: “Such policies and measures negatively affect the obligations of member states on the international humanitarian law and European law,” A couple of people are deciding where and who should be saddled with the burden of making them look good. wabothai
My solution: Close the borders as we used to have before the union. Anybody still entering without the proper paperwork will be arrested and taken for questioning. If not a genuine refugee, deport immediately. Disadvantage is traffic jams at the borders. Take care of genuine refugees in already established camps and have them go to proper procedure. It is very difficult to control hordes. When the hordes thin themselves out all over Europe it won't be that hard to catch and arrest them. Social control, not to be underestimated, will take care of that. Still a problem, but less of a problem.

Ulic
Of course Italy is upset. Now the migrants will be stuck in Italy and Italy's problem to deal with.

It's "open borders" for EU citizens and people with Schengen visas, not the entire world.

Germany closed borders and no one protests. Austria does and the EU say tut, tut. And there are some who still don't think Germany runs the EU admin arm. But dear old Angela Merkel threw the doors open - and she's never going to back down or admit she's wrong even though she closed German borders. Only difference is gender, colors and "the talk". Yes, the EU is a socialist shithole invention. And yes, nazis were (and those few left, are) leftist. Germany did not close it's borders, it introduced border controls. Which meant general traffic including commuters where slowed down and harrassed while the criminals simply walked past over some open field unfazed and unhindered. Police where even forbidden to physically stop them. And those poor sods actually being stopped and sent back to Austria for saying they were actually running for their life to Scandinavia "to claim asylum" there, i.e. not in Germany, simply walked to the next crossing to then give "the right answer". Saradoc1972
Oh yes, and I, too, am 'concerned', gravely so. But it's not about the fences but rather about the dazzling display of stupidity, lawlessness, recklessness, and ineptitude that now necessitates the building of those fences.
