Racist statements lead lawmakers to reject John Wayne Day

Featured Replies

Putting Jackson on the back of the bill is a cool statement. Jackson actually was a historic political figure. As opposed to Wayne -- a MOVIE star.

On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew said Tubman would replace Jackson on the front of the $20 bill, becoming the first woman in more than a century and first African American to grace the front of a paper note. Jackson will be featured on the back of the bill alongside an image of the White House.

As far as the John Wayne Day, I think killing that does more harm than good. It calls attention to some crappy stuff that Wayne might have supported that almost nobody knew about before as he's known for his MOVIES. So now the people killing it have given honoring Wayne a bigoted power it really never really had. Totally stupid.

Thinking about my Dad's love of John Wayne movies, yes he loved the old timey American patriotism expressed in those movies, sure, but I'm sure he didn't see loving those movies as an endorsement of racism towards black people.
