Min of Agriculture combats IUU fishing in 8 areas

BANGKOK, 29 April 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has decided to tackle illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in eight different areas, in a move to deal with the issue more effectively.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya has recently attended a seminar entitled ‘Fisheries Beyond Thai Waters’. To stop recurring illegal fishing activities, the minister said the 2015 Fisheries Act was introduced by the Department of Fisheries (DOF).

The law ensures the sustainability of marine resources and that all fishing activities in Thailand meet global standards. In addition to the law, the ministry will also put together teams to deal with eight key areas associated with IUU fishing.

They will ensure that all fishing boats have a vessel monitoring system installed, that every vessel is registered with the DOF and that relevant laws are being enforced rigorously.

Gen Chatchai also cited the need to inform local fishers about the changes in regulations. The ministry will convene a meeting next week to decide how it will monitor efforts to eradicate IUU fishing.

I thought all this was done last year or was that just a story for the press. Supposedly they stopped all the illegal fishing and made them all get licences, register their boats, use legal fishing methods etc to stop the raping of thai waters. Unfortunately those in charge do not have the intestinal fortitude(balls) to actually do what is needed, they play patsy with these people that refuse to do the right thing instead of arresting them, confiscating and burning their boats and equipment, this is the only thing they will understand as they simply refuse to abide by the laws governing fishing. When you have pathetic heads of government offices you will never be able to stop all this crap, they prefer to be praised then be strong and do the right thing by the country, even last year after several refused to pay for licences etc they still let them go fishing rather than come down hard, p*ss poor on their part.

A condensed version:

A Ministry has decided to tackle and move to deal with IIU Fishing, and a Minister attended a seminar where a Fisheries Act was introduced. A Ministry will also put together teams, ensure sustainability and standards, has identified the need to inform fishers, will convene a meeting and will decide how to monitor efforts.

Of course, the is the actual problem of IIU Fishing, which may have to be corrected some day.

Unfortunately, I think they are going to get burned because Europe and the US want results, not just new laws.

All of the fishing captains were informed last year and their response was bugger-off. These guys are not going to change what they, and their fathers, have been doing for the last 70 years. The government will then send more ministers to more meetings and inform everyone again and the cycle will continue ad-nausem. Then one bright sunny day in the LOS the EU and the U.S. will inform the government that they will no longer allow imports of fish products. Then the government will get angry at the farang for not understanding Thailand. And the dance continues.

Saturday Night Live could make the situation funny, but it really is not funny. The real problem is that slavery is not generally viewed as a problem here, by the population or the government and if there is only one fish left, Thais will fight over it, and then try to find someone to blame for the lack of fish. Then the country will wallow around in the misery that defines a Third World Country until ....... well, to be truthful I do not know what happens or if there is an "until."

Living on the beach here in Thailand you can see all the boats out every night. Hundreds draining the ocean of any life and the the fishermaen use it as there dump sight. There is no control over any of this and it is sad to watch. Cleaning up the beaches only hides the terrible treatment thailand pays it's oceans. It iseems such a simple thing to control or at least educate some of these peoploe but most don't want to learn a thing and so it goes on and on.

That's the way to do it!!

This topic seems to be talked about a bit lately, I believe this is an indication of no action.

I wish you were right but unfortunately I don't think the US or EU give a monkeys. This is not a new problem the warning are hardly new as well, the action is zero. They may as well go whisper "its OK really" to the Thai authorities.

Yes, and a change from the idiotic mind-set of

" relevant laws are being enforced rigorously." lol Relevant laws as opposed to ir-relevant laws?
