HAVANA: -- Britain’s Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond visited Havana on Thursday for talks with his Cuban counterpart in the first such visit since 1959.

It was the latest development in an ongoing thawing of relations between the Caribbean country and the United States and follows Barack Obama’s visit last month.

Shortly after landing in Havana, Hammond laid a floral wreath at a monument dedicated to Cuba’s revolution hero Jose Marti.

Four memorandums of understanding were signed between the UK and Cuba, covering education, energy, culture and financial services.
