Prescription ?

Hi,

I'm on regular medication which is only available on prescription.

When I moved here from the UK I bought a good supply with me, however, I'm now running low so will need a prescription.

I've bought a letter from my UK GP advising what medication I'm on etc., Any idea where I should go to get a repeat prescription?

I live in Huay Yai but will obviously go into Pattaya if necessary.

Thanks,

H.

Generally try a hospital pharmacy if it's something not normally in shops.

But for better information, you really should name the exact medication, or even post in the health forum.

You seem certain you will need a scrip here ... I assume you know for most things here you don't.

Not all meds from the U.K. will be available here. Most will but many will have different BRAND names than you're used to.

You can stop by most any friendly pharmacy and check for what equivalent might be available here ... they generally all have a master book about that.

It really depends on the medication.

Many medications here in Thailand do not require a prescription. You should check with a local Pharmacist (take your letter any empty packets etc )

If the Pharmacist is unable to assist you will need to see a Dr at a nearby hospital to get a prescription.

When researching equivalent meds here, be sure to know the ACTIVE INGREDIENT of the med in addition to the brand name. Often, you will need that to see what equivalents may be sold in Thailand from their Thailand master book.

If you haven't done your own research about this yet, I wouldn't waste money to see a doc to get a scrip here before you have checked out whether you can buy your (equivalent) meds directly from many pharmacies.

Another tip ... STOCK UP.

There is a med I've been using for years that mysteriously nobody has stock of anymore. I haven't found an equivalent yet and there might not be one. Luckily, I probably won't die from not having it, but welcome to realities in Thailand.

Thanks for the info.......

Yes, I've checked with several pharmacies and they do stock the product but prescription only.

Was wondering if the small clinics you see can issue prescriptions also are there any Doctors you can visit other than those based at the Hospital ??

If you just want a scrip and you know local pharmacies stock it (as opposed to hospitals only) you can go the cheapest of clinics with your documentation and just say you need it. If you actually want a fresh medical evaluation, I would go to a hospital doctor.

Thanks.....

I assume the 'Clinics' are what I think they are - Have a Green cross similar to a Pharmacy - Because I've been on this medication for a long time and the initial diagnosis was correct I'm only looking for a repeat of the same medication, so hopefully one of these Clinics may suffice...

Generally "clinics" here will give you a scrip for whatever you want if it sounds credible. Your documents sound credible. They'll charge a nominal consult fee and I doubt they will demand new lab tests unless you want them and think you need them.

Again, if you think you need a fresh evaluation, you can post on the health forum and perhaps get a specific reference to a local specialist.

I thought he said street pharmacies have the med!

Yes, I've checked with several pharmacies and they do stock the product but prescription only.

If that is true the cheapest option is a basic clinic for Thai people and just bring the docs and ask for a scrip. Sorted.

2 months ago i was about to take a trip to my passportcountry in europe. I read from customs webpage that one needs medical certificate or prescription if coming outside of EU and bringing meds what need prescription in europe. I take some meds here in Thailand what are over the counter drugs here but not in europe so i decided to get some sort of medical certificate for my trip to europe..

I tried some clinics in jomtien without luck. I finally got my paper from some clinic in intersection of pattaya tai/ third road. Maby OP could try there or hospital. Every jomtien clinic told me to go to hospital.
