2nd extension visa exemption?

Featured Replies

I arrived BKK almost 2 months ago on a visa exemption and extended it in Chiang Mai. Extension expires 9 May. A current round of dental treatments here in CM is lasting longer than anticipated. Do I have any options with immigration for a short 2nd extension if I can document dental treatments or do I need to leave the country? If I have to leave, I understand that visa runs to Laos are no longer possible? I can fly to KL and back for about $100. Is that the simplest option? Passport is empty, aside from the exemption and extension. There wouldn't be a problem with a new exemption immediately after the current one flying in from KL, would there?

You could get an extension medical treatment if you were unable to travel proven by a doctor. It does not sound like you could meet that requirement.

You can do a a border crossing at the Chiang Khong crossing to Laos to get a new visa exempt entry. You will only get a 15 day entry unless you are from a G7 country.

Not sure where you heard or that it was not possible to do it.

I doubt immigration will permit a "medical extension" based on dental treatment.

You can now only get a 7 day extension during which you must leave the country.

Depending on how long the dental treatment will last a Tourist Visa, obtained from a nearby country, may suit your needs as it provides for a 60 day initial stay which can be extended by a further 30 days.

You can get another visa exempt entry if you wish. 30 days if arriving by air or 15 days by land unless you hold a G7 passport in which case 30 days will be given.

I do not know where you heard about " visa runs" to Laos not being permitted but it is nonsense.

Maybe he means the Masai visa run is no longer available?

Ah, ok. That's good. Thank you. So immigration will give me a final 7 days just for asking, or I can turn around same day in Chiang Kong and get a new 30 day visa exemption (US passport) without any hassles. Is that right?

The Mae Sai border crossing is into Burma(Myanmar) NOT Laos !

You will have to pay 1900 baht after applying for the extension and then you will be given 7 days to leave the country.

You can get a 30 day visa exempt entry at Chiang Khong with out a problem. The Lao visa on arrival will cost 1500 baht or $35.

Although they now calculate what $35 is in Baht and charge you that amount, rather than a straigh 1500 Baht

Since when and at which crossing?

Six weeks ago at the Chiang Kong border, I was unable to get hold of any US $ so I paid 1500 B for the Laos Visa, and he gave me an official receipt back with the calculation and 250 odd Baht back
