BoT debunks ATM shut down rumors

BANGKOK, 2 May 2016 (NNT) – The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has debunked rumors circulating on social networks that all banks will shut down their ATM services on May 4.

The BoT has addressed circulating news that due to its order for all commercial banks to upgrade their automatic teller machines to the EMV Chip Card/ISO by May 7, ATM services across the country will go offline on May 4, affirming that the public has misunderstood the information.

The bank asserts that many banks have already upgraded their systems and that the adjustment is being done in a gradual and systematic manner as to not affect users. It said it will provide updates on the process as they occur.

It also explained that its new ATM card requirements will only apply to applications from November 16 of this year onward and that magnetic strip cards that are currently in use will continue to be applicable.

That doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the Thai banking system. does it.?

Just more "Thainess" I guess.

I'm sure it will pass however.

Hmmmm, my BKK Bank ATM's where l live were not working for a few days, had to go to an actual BKK Bank branch to get some dosh...

Maybe because of the weekend and the public holiday ?

Expect you have their chipped Be1st card. If so, if you had their non-chipped card you could have used any Thai bank ATM. I still use the non-chipped Be1st card for that very reason...yea, yea, I know, the chipped card is safer, but I too have all too frequently run into non-working Bangkok Bank ATMs and don't want to go looking for another one which could be a good distance away...instead, just use any Thai bank ATM with the non-chipped card. Yea, yea (again) I know the chipped card is more secure....once more Thai banks get their ATMs upgraded to where they will worked with Bangkok Bank ATM cards I'll get a Be1st chipped card.

I made the same decision to use the non-chipped card. A Bangkok Bank ATM wouldn't return my BKK visa card a few months ago so I phoned up to cancel it. They said I could and should get a new chipped card at my branch. Thankfully, the cashier explained you can only use the chipped ones in the BKK ATMs. Like you, I'm staying with the standard cards.

Reading the OP before posting is always a good idea, the ATMs are not being shut down.

Does this mean my EMV BKK visa debit will work on other machines too finally? That would be nice given I am all too familiar with walking an extra kilometer to be greeted with the red screen of despair.

Believe this and you will believe anything....these banks are preparing for the economic sh!tstorm that is heading this way....why did the สถานปันคุ้มครองเงินฝาก which is the Deposit Protection Agency reduce the amount covered from 50 million baht to one million from Aug.10 this year...they know something, Wake up people.
