Metropolitan Police to coordinate with schools to alleviate rush-hour traffic

BANGKOK, 11 May 2016 (NNT) - The Metropolitan Police Bureau, in preparation for the new school semester, is surveying problematic locations and coordinating with schools in managing drop-off locations for parents and students, in order to reduce traffic congestion.

Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Pol Maj Gen Adul Narongsak said he has instructed all stations to coordinate with nearby schools and to ask for cooperation from parents in utilizing various traffic management services such as carpooling and Park & Ride, as well as swiftly dropping off their children in order to reduce traffic congestion in front of schools.

Among the many problematic areas is Samsen Road which is home to eight schools and a maze of small alleys. Officials have been instructed to survey areas in order to adequately deploy personnel and manage traffic accordingly, as well as to coordinate with irrigation offices to manage flood-prone streets in readiness for the rainy season.

It´s especially the taxi´s and-or minivans who cause congestion infront of schools.

Because of them the bus has no place to stop, so it stops on the middle of the road.

Samsen road because so many army live around there. This is a problem everywhere. Like the school on ayuthaya road near phayathai which backs up traffic all the way towards ratchaprarop every morning. There is a long drive way as well as a big parking lot inside, plenty of space to allow for multiple drop offs simultaneously. But for some reason, despite all the signs outside about how innovative the school is and how many awards it and its students have won, when driving down the road , you reach the exit first and cars entering are stuck behind cars entering and chaos ensues each and every morning. Just reversing the flow would alleviate so much of the bottleneck. All the drop offs and pick ups can be done inside. There is no reason for it at all.

What about stopping kids riding motorbikes that obviously are too young to have license and no helmets ,sorry I forgot we don't know who their parents might be

Government must consider re-locating those schools that are in congested city areas not only to ease the traffic but as a safety consideration for the kids. In Singapore we had the same problem of lots of schools in the central city area. Major schools like the St Joseph and RGS and probably half a dozen schools were in the very busy central part of the city and was a daily traffic nightmare. New schools were built on the city fringe with easy accessibilities by road and now by train. Some grumbling in the beginning when forced to move but eventually everyone see the benefits. Will the education ministry take this up? Maybe....or maybe not.
