VPN available on Opera for free.

Featured Replies

Interesting, since it's not Apple specific let's move to the main IT forum.

Just downloaded the Developer version of Opera (I like to live dangerously) and currently have two browser windows open, one thinks I'm in Thailand, the other The Netherlands.

You need to open a private browsing session (Ctrl-Shift-N in Windows) to access the VPN.

Speedtest seems pretty reasonable.

Sadly you are currently limited to servers in Canada, The US, Netherlands and Germany, so no BBC sad.png

Read about it here http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2016/04/free-vpn-integrated-opera-for-windows-mac/

Installation links for Windows, Mac and Linux are at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for posting this.

Two questions:

Is it available on the mobile version of Opera?

Will other apps operate through the VPN while Opera is open?

Thanks!

I don't have the mobile version, so cannot test, but other apps do NOT get VPN access, just the particular private window you have started.

And you don't appear to be able to have different VPN destinations in different windows.

Many VPN services have free versions but they are severely bandwidth limited and certain types of files are not supported (e.g., torrent files). I wonder if one could stream or DL video files using Opera's service... I doubt it.

Stable and fast VPNs are pretty cheap at $30-40 per year...

Opera's turbo feature has been good enough for me

Cool you moved it. I found on Mac-Forums so I posted on Apple here. I thought it said 5 countries.

But either way "FREE" is a pretty decent price. LOL

Curious? Is turbo on Opera a virtual VPN? Sincere question.

No, Turbo basically just routes all browsing data through Opera servers where it compresses parts of it in an attempt to shorten download time at the users end:

How does it work?

The pages you visit go through one of our servers. The server identifies pieces of the page that can be compressed. It shaves off image pixels and corrects video buffering. Then, it sends back these smaller-sized pieces to your device."

I'm not sure how beneficial that feature is now that high-speed ADSL/DOCSIS are more common. In the days where dial-up was more common, I think the feature was more useful.

People.

Please be aware of the following forum rule:-

4) You will not not discuss methods of bypassing blocking of websites, or circumventing any censorship of the internet or other communications by lawful authorities.

VPN's are not illegal per-sé, however their use to bypass Thai government blocks is prohibited by the Computer Crimes Act, please take care.
