Argentina's Fernandez charged with state fraud

DEBORA REY, Associated Press

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez was charged on Friday with defrauding the state as part of her government's handling of the dollar futures market.

Federal judge Claudio Bonadio said that a scheme to keep the Argentine peso inflated by selling dollars below market value would not have been possible without Fernandez's approval.

Bonadio has said this cost the state about $5.2 billion, allowing buyers to make big profits on the transactions. The sales also led to a sharp drop in Central Bank reserves.

Fernandez, who has denied any wrongdoing and says she is the victim of political persecution, can appeal the decision.

Former Economy Minister Axel Kicillof, former Central Bank President Alejandro Vanoli and 12 other former officials were also charged, according to the decision published by the official judicial news agency.

The crime is punishable by 5-20 years in prison.

Fernandez was dogged by corruption allegations during her eight years in the presidency. Since leaving office in December, she has also been included in investigations involving allegations of money laundering and possible illegal enrichment.

There seems to be a phenomena of bent politicians who are all socialist, left wing liberals claiming to be the savior of the poor and workers who get caught for being common criminals stealing billions from the people they profess to care so much about. And when they are caught they all claim it's politically motivated!

Bang em up for a long time.

Hurrah! Nestor's street hooker brought to justice and with 12 other criminals. Out on bail no doubt. She made millions of people

desperately miserable. I lived there for a time and saw the misery. May she get the maximum number of years with no parole.

As more and more corruption comes to light we see more politicians in the dock , at what point do we say , this crap needs to change politicians no longer make the rules .

Actually it is a feature of populism which by definition cannot deliver and therefore ends up in corruption and cronyism. However, examples of both right and left populism exist (see eg Trump and Sanders) and supporting either wing attacking the other is a dead end. In the case of Argentina, Peronism from its very beginning was a corrupt populist movement and Fernandez the latest in a long line.

You can catch that woman holding a bloodied knife and a severed head and she still wouldn't own up.
