Hate all you want, but a burning Fort McMurray was pretty happy it had a bunch of oil companies next

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. – Call Fort McMurray the anti-Deepwater Horizon spill.

Six years ago, the world watched as British Petroleum flailed helplessly as one of its oil rigs poured oil into the Gulf of Mexico, assured the U.S. that the effects of the largest oil spill in history would be “very, very modest” — and then flew out their Bond-villainesque CEO to complain about how inconvenient all this was.

“I’d like my life back,” Tony Hayward infamously told cameras.

But in Fort McMurray last week, thousands of evacuees learned that it can actually be quite a nifty thing to have the world’s petro-superpowers as your next-door neighbours.
