31 provinces declared drought aid zones

BANGKOK, 17 May 2016 (NNT) – 31 provinces have been declared urgent assistant zones as an alternative plan to provide water supply is now underway in all villages, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

The DDPM Director-General Chatchai Promlert has revealed that 7,876 villages in 198 districts of 31 provinces have been declared as urgent affected zones.

Out of 31 provinces, 11 face a shortage in water for consumption, right face the lack of water for agriculture, and 12 provinces face the lack of water for both consumption and agriculture.

The DDPM has appointed local agencies to assess the availability of water resources in all villages to execute plans to ensure water availability until 30 July. Areas with insufficient water resources are urged to work with local agencies on the development of new water resources and common water distribution locations.

Provinces which house local tap water manufacturing plants, which are facing the risk of water insufficiency, should be especially monitored with the related agencies coming up with back up plans should the water supply is not enough for tap water manufacturing, and to communicate with the general public on this issue.

The DDPM director-general has further said that the DDPM, provinces, and military units, are working to carry out rainmaking operations in areas above the dam whenever the weather is suitable, while all sides are asked to use water conservatively, maximize water, use efficiency, and follow the forecast from the Meteorological Department to plan their cultivation accordingly to ensure continuous water availability for consumption and environmental protection throughout the dry season.
