Clinton aims for Kentucky win to break Sanders' momentum
By KEN THOMAS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton sought to avoid primary losses in Kentucky and Oregon on Tuesday, aiming to blunt the momentum of challenger Bernie Sanders ahead of a likely general election matchup against Republican Donald Trump.

Clinton entered Tuesday's primaries with a commanding lead of nearly 300 pledged delegates over Sanders and a dominant advantage among party officials and elected leaders known as superdelegates.

She remains on track to clinch the nomination in early June, but is trying to avoid ending the primary season with a string of losses to the Vermont senator.

Tuesday's elections took place amid new questions about party unity following a divisive weekend state party convention in Nevada. Supporters of Sanders tossed chairs and made death threats against the Nevada party chairwoman at the event in Las Vegas, arguing the party leadership rigged the results of the convention in favor of Clinton.

In a sign of the tensions between the two sides, Sanders issued a defiant statement on Tuesday dismissing complaints from Nevada Democrats as "nonsense" and said his supporters were not being treated with "fairness and respect."

Trump was competing in the sole GOP contest in Oregon. The billionaire businessman picked up nine delegates earlier Tuesday in Guam, which held its territorial convention in March, and had 1,143 delegates heading into the Oregon contest — fewer than 100 delegates short of the 1,237 he needs to clinch the nomination.

For Democrats, 55 delegates were up for grabs in Kentucky and 61 delegates were at stake in Oregon.

In Kentucky, the former secretary of state visited black churches, a small-town diner and held rallies on Sunday and Monday in an effort to break up Sanders' momentum after his recent victories in Indiana and West Virginia.

Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton, was the last Democrat to carry the state in a presidential election — he won Kentucky in 1992 and 1996 — and the former first lady tried to emphasize those ties in the days leading up to the primary.

"I'm excited about the primary but we've got to turn a lot of people out," Clinton told a packed diner in Paducah, Ky., on Monday. "I'll tell you this. I'm not going to give up on Kentucky in November. I want to help to bring back the kind of economy that worked for everybody in the 1990s."

Facing a choice between Clinton and Sanders, physician Annie Skaggs in Campbellsville, Kentucky, said she had a hard time making up her mind.

"I like them both. I wanted to put them both in a blender and whir them up together," she said. "I voted for Hillary. She's got a little broader base and more experience, especially with foreign policy."

Sharon Sharp said she voted for Sanders for one reason: He is not Hillary Clinton.

"Benghazi and the emails? That's just too much to trust her to run my country," Sharp said after casting her vote.

Sanders was favored in Oregon, which is among the nation's most liberal states. Sanders secured the endorsement of Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., in April.

Nearing the end of a long primary slog, the two Democratic candidates are preparing for June 7 primaries in California, New Jersey and four other states. When pledged delegates and superdelegates are combined, Clinton entered Tuesday is about 94 percent of the way toward securing the Democratic nomination.

Sanders has vowed to campaign through the end of the primary season on June 14 in the District of Columbia and amass as many delegates as possible to influence the party's platform and message.

He is still aiming to wrestle the nomination from Clinton, even though he would need to win about two-thirds of the remaining pledged delegates to end the primary season in a tie.

Sanders campaigned Monday and Tuesday in Puerto Rico, which holds its contest on June 5, and was holding a rally in the Los Angeles area late Tuesday.

"I'm excited about the primary but we've got to turn a lot of people out," Clinton told a packed diner in Paducah, Ky., on Monday.

Hillary is sure getting everyone excited, look here; in Paducah she has packed a local diner. Really packed must have been 40 or 50 supporters trying to squeeze in (but I suspect a free lunch had more to do with the crowd). Meanwhile Bernie or Donald sell out NFL stadiums.

She is tired, her message is tired and the American public have had enough of the globalization she spouts, now that the truth is coming out. Being a founding member of the Cinton Global Initiative won't sell well either, global (as in globalization) is not selling well anywhere across the developed world.

Well, she's already pulled out her woman card and her biggest "Trump" card ahead of the general election (her husband) assuring people that if they vote for her, Bill will make sure she's doing things correctly (in between banging secretaries). Why doesn't she just go ahead and either name Bill as her VP or hand over the reins and make herself HIS VP.

HRC won Kentucky just barely but she'd been considerably behind Bernie so she bore in at a full court press to show how she can and does swing voters to her side, to include to get 'em up off the couch to go vote.

Hillary's supporters are steady and stable while a significant number of Bernie's loudest supporters have a lot in common with the Trump fans.

HRC has won 11 of 12 Democratic Party voters-only primary states.

Bernie is using the existence of super delegates, which HRC does not need, as a dubious rationale to stay in the race. HRC leads significantly in pledged delegates selected in the primaries and caucuses. She doesn't need the super delegates and HRC never needed the super delegates. She'll get 'em anyway after she gets to the nominating threshold number on pledged delegates only.

She's doing an excellent job of running against the commonality of Sanders and Trump and their fans out there at the edges. In this year of throw out the rules, HRC is likely the only thing keeping apart these two fanbases as she stands squarely in between 'em.

Grandma Hillary buried old Bernie by a whopping 0.5%...46.8% to 46.3%.

She's having a real struggle putting the old guy down so just imagine what it will be like when she goes up against somebody that fights back.

She's liable to get so upset she might yell out something like..."What difference, at this point, does it make?"

Meanwhile we see death threats flying off the shelf at the Dems Convention! facepalm.gif

Sanders and Clinton better get their people oragnized or it'll be a meltdown of Biblical proportions! blink.png

I remember just a few days ago, all the liberals on the forum were talking about the anticipated meltdown at the Republican convention and how much fun they are going to have.

It seems some of the Sanders' supporters have now turned their anger towards the Democrats. They rioted in Chicago, San Diego and Costa Mesa against Trump and now some Soros community organizer has spun them up against the Democrats.

The Republicans might have a rather sedate convention compared to what the Democrats better be anticipating in Philadelphia.

That's going to be the fun one to watch.thumbsup.gif

The election is about the voters which is the central point Donald Trump doesn't get.

In the D party it's not an easy pick between HRC or Bernie. There's a strong core of voter support for each of 'em. It's also the obvious case of the well established frontrunner being taken on by a strong challenger.

Keep in mind Bernie's number one is that no Republican be elected Potus. R's might want to remember that in your nightly prayers.

Democrats are shamed.

Hillary's butt was already dragging on the ground, with all the charges against her.

FBI probably has her house staked out, as it is a treasure trove of unprotected classified documents. Russians had a field day...raping our secrets out of her irresponsible hide.

Now Bernie is stirring the old krap pot with a short stick. Both sides are duking it out like there is no tomorrow...

As Trump sits down to a fine dinner, and laughs. The Trumpster...

The flagrant vote rigging is as expected the only impressive thing about the Clinton campaign.

Good thx so speaking for myself, you know where to find me...biggrin.png

She only squeaked out KY because she promised them her husband would be doing all the work for her.

Bill Clinton won Kentucky in 1992 and in 1996. Last time before that a Democrat for Potus won KY was Jimmy Carter in 1976. KY has voted R for Potus in 7 of the past 10 elections of Potus.

It is doubtful HRC would win Kentucky in November because it normally votes Republican for Potus and Trump has a siren sound to Republican voters (who hear all kinds of sounds no one else hears).

However, KY Democrats are still bargain hunters in that they continue to like getting two for the price of one. Any voter anywhere else who doesn't bargain hunt would need to live by the old warning of caveat emptor Donald Trump.

As usual; A+ for Spin. Her 46.8% vs Sanders' 46.3%. And a 27 - 27 split in delegates. (Those are the numbers as reported by AP.) Lol - yeah, an "excellent job" and a real decisive victory alright. Is this the new clintonology? And definition of "mandate"?
