NBTC stresses responsible journalism in light of World Press Freedom Day

BANGKOK, 18 May 2016, (NNT) - The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) has recently held talks in observance of World Press Freedom Day 2016.

The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.

During the discussion, NBTC Commissioner Supinya Klangnarong stressed that members of press, while protected by freedom of expression, must report on events with responsibility and ethics. She added that they must consider the Kingdom's interests in order to perform their duty as journalists.

The NBTC Commissioner said journalism in the digital age is about presenting accurate stories, while maintaining journalistic integrity. Miss Supinya also believed that freedom is an essential element in reporting stories concerning politics, economy and social affairs.

The Commissioner talks of responsibility when reporting and of considering the Kingdom's interests.

Is this an extension of the junta's attitude that criticism, no matter how justified, is irresponsible and against the national interests ?

They have freedom to report on mall openings, lost puppies and visiting football team. What more could they want?

Well they have almost a year to prepare for it.
