CAIRO: -- Scouring the Mediterranean for clues, Egyptian search teams have been joined by teams from Greece, France, US, UK and Turkey to hunt for signs of missing Egyptair flight MS804.

The company retracted earlier claims that wreckage was spotted, bringing them in line with Greek authorities who said that the debris found was not from the Airbus 320 which disappeared with 66 people on board.

The flight had been scheduled to arrive in Cairo from Paris soon after 3.15 am local time. Greek aviation officials report that the aircraft swerved violently before losing height and dropping off the radar without a distress signal shortly after entering Egyptian airspace.

The plane is presumed crashed in the Mediterranean to the east of Greece, about 16 kilometres into Egyptian airspace. A review of satellite images by US officials reportedly reveal no signs of an explosion on board.

Experts point to the Airbus 320’s excellent safety record and the clear weather conditions as reasons to consider whether a device was behind the crash, which means the focus could shift onto airport security.
