What is a word made up of 4 letters yet is also made up of 3. Although is written with 8 letters, and then with 4. Rarely consists of 6, and never is written with 5?

First guess would be the sun. But then again the sun revolves around the earth, so can't be right ;-)

on a serous note, the sun, although still in our solar system, does move at around 70k km/hr within our galaxy. And our galaxy is moving at a speed of 2 million km/hr through the universe.
