KORAT: -- A Korat construction worker - angry that a friend would not pay him his fair share of money for jobs - finally had enough. He left the drinking party and returned with a shotgun and blew his friend away.

Police called to the downtown Ban Nimit housing estate, Nakorn Rachasima, Sunday evening found Sayan Marksuk, 41, dead in a pool of blood with a single shotgun wound to his chest reported Daily News.

The shooter had fled on a motorcycle but police soon rounded him up by the estate's swimming pool a short distance away.

Suphachai Phliasai, 40, admitted what he had done. He told police that the victim and himself were friends who were working on house extensions together. He said that his friend had refused to give him the agreed share of the profits and had asked repeatedly for the money owed that ran into tens of thousands of baht.

Suphachai said Sayan was a big guy and the victim threatened him saying if they had a fight he would beat him. On Sunday he got angry while they were drinking alcohol together and emboldened by the booze he went to get the gun before coming back and shooting his friend.

He said he was ready to face prison time. Police detained him.

How come, and this is probably a silly question, non-Thais can get the death penalty yet I have not seen one Thai no matter what crime they committed ever get the death penalty.

The Malaysians with drugs and the guys from the Koh Tau murders spring to mind. We read Thai's, like the guy in this story commit murder yet I bet he wont get the death sentence the same as many others have not received it.

Before anyone comes out with the usual comments it would be appreciated if someone could give a proper answer. I have lived in Thailand longer than most on this forum so no silly comments please.

The answer is that if you confess the judge goes easy on you. Death becomes life and 20 years become half or 10 years.

Why, he only killed one guy?

Surely he could insist that as he was under the influence of alcohol and wasn't responsible for his actions, he ought to be given the chance to shave his head, wai the victim's family at he funeral,( they were friends after all) and then buzz off to the local wat and don the saffron for a few weeks of deep meditation.

They do. The Thais seem to play it pretty low key though, compared to some other countries.

It is actually White Western Farangs they seem reluctant to shoot or inject. So far I know of none who have been executed.

Tuesday, August 25, 2009, 2 convicted drug traffickers at Bang Kwang prison were executed by lethal injection. Bundit Jaroenwanit, 45, and Jirawat Poompreuk, 52, yesterday became the country's 5th and 6th people to be executed by lethal injection, which replaced death by shooting in 2003. They were given 60 minutes to call or write to their loved ones. They were then offered a last meal and a chance to listen to a sermon from a monk invited from Wat Bang Praek Tai.

Of course it doesn't come under quite the same heading but Taksins War On Drugs, claimed up to 2,800, summarily executed. Give or take.

Reasons for commuting of the death Sentence? The list of mitigating circumstances includes lack of intelligence, serious distress, previous good conduct, repentance by the offender, voluntary surrender to an official, and information given to the court for the benefit of the trial. In 2005, the Thai government reported to the U.N. Human Rights Committee that there was no mandatory death penalty. http://www.deathpenaltyworldwide.org/
