Moving this to the travel forum in the hopes that somebody will reply there. Leaving a link in the source forum.

Does anyone know the cost?

bus 556 from the airport to Khaosan rd is only 35 baht by the expressway, the taxi will be 400 baht (300 fare, 50 airport taxi tax, 50 tall - if you are in rush).

(from don muang to khaosan was always below 200 baht - you did not have to pay tall if there was not heavy congestion)

You must have known the good cabbies then, I've never seen the Dm to Khao san for under 200 baht. Either way if you can't handle the bus, 300-400 baht isn't steep considering what you would pay for a taxi that same distance in most western countries.
