Commerce to monitor prices of goods closely

BANGKOK: -- The minister of commerce says she will be monitoring prices of food closely in the effort to tackle rising cost of living in the country.

Mrs Apiradi Tantraporn, the Commerce Minister, yesterday reiterated the ministry’s plans to have the Department of Internal trade carry out a continuous monitoring of prices for domestic goods and services.

She said even though the prices of many food products such as fresh vegetables and pork is stable and shows signs of falling slightly, the ministry feels that with the approaching rainy season, prices of many other products will be forced to rise.

Part of the plan will actively employ market mechanisms currently used by the ‘Noo Nit’ cheap goods program to make available low cost products for the public.

One campaign that is on the cards is the ‘Noo Nit Blue Flag – Eat Nationwide’ which is expected to be officially launched from June 1-5 at the Muangthong Thani Convention Centre.

Meanwhile the Thai Rice Packers Association president assured the public that prices of bagged rice will remain stable and no price hikes was being planned even though prices for unmilled rice has risen by 10%.

He said that the association was still able to provide bagged rice at the same price because old rice stocks were still being used.

He confirmed that prices for 5 kg bagged white rice will remain between 70 – 80 baht while Jasmine rice will also still be sold at between 170 – 180 baht per pack.

However he warned however that if by August – September no new rice stocks are released into the market then they will have no choice but to raise prices.

My mrs also tells me she also get far less on some items, ie coriander might still be the same price but you actually get far less than before. Trying to get a cauliflower this week was difficult and where they used to be 15 baht the few available were 25 baht, market prices, not all bad news though durian is so expensive now the mrs won't buy it clap2.gif

It must be really bad for the people that are on minimum wage. Since I have lived here the price of everything has risen but living wages has either stayed the same or in most cases even dropped. When I first came here in 2005 I was on 35,000 baht a month teaching but if you look on any teaching job related websites they are now advertising between 20 - 40,000, most only offer 30,000. The funny thing is many of my private student parents are telling me that the school fees have increased rather than dropped. No wonder the school directors can afford their flashy new cars.

This announcement is made as regularly as the tourism ministry reports increases in visitor arrivals.

Are two certain ladies in some sort of competition ?

Only in Thailand: competition in a downward spiral. Tzzzzzzzzzzzz

i know a guy who has been teaching for 9 years. he has been on the same salary for the whole time. approx 30K/month. someone correct me but are western English teachers paid directly by the king or by one of his foundations? this guy is getting more and more desperate to supplement his income. for sure it is costing more to live here on his salary. he even has taken on a heavyset Norwegian girlfriend who he is conning into buying stuff for him. she even contact me and i told her straight up he is taking her for a ride but she refused to believe me. he recently got married to a thai girl, probably to get a visa while between jobs. not sure how he juggles both of them. great story, he even managed to con me out of a fair amount of cash as well.

"Part of the plan will actively employ market mechanisms currently used by the ‘Noo Nit’ cheap goods program to make available low cost products for the public." thereby driving out of business vendors who deal in real world of supply and demand. Difference in price of course to be made up for by taxpayers. Has anyone in commerce department ever taken a class in basic economics? And passed?
