Tourism revenue in the second quarter of the year to top 560 billion Baht

BANGKOK, 24 May 2016 (NNT) - The Tourism and Sports Minister expects revenue from foreign tourists in the second quarter of the year will expand by 10.8%, while revenue from domestic tourism is expected to expand by 6.5%.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said tourism revenue in the second quarter of the year will top 560 billion baht, of which 355 billion baht was generated by approximately 7.46 million foreign tourists.

The growth is mainly attributed to the uptick in Chinese tourists coming to Thailand, despite the overall shrinking number of Chinese tourists worldwide. In the second quarter of the year, the ministry expects 2.18 million Chinese tourists will visit Thailand, a 9.3% increase from the same period last year.

The number of tourists from Europe is expected to top 1.01 million people, a 7.5% increase from the same period last year, while ASEAN tourists will account for 2.18 million, a 6.7% increase from the same period.

Meanwhile, 36 million Thais are expected to travel in the country during the second quarter, a 4% increase year-on-year. Domestic tourism is expected to generate 205 billion baht in revenue, a 6.5% increase from the same period. Tourism in the country’s seven major tourist cities will generate 133 billion baht in domestic tourism revenue, while the 12 must-see cities project is expected to generate 33 billion baht in the first half of this year.

In total, the country will generate 1.24 trillion baht in tourism revenue in the first half of the year, accounting for 51% of the annual target for 2016. This year, the ministry expects a total of 32 million foreign tourists.

Of course, you can make numbers do anything when they're little more than educated guesses to begin with.

We are only half way through the second quarter. 9 days past. So now we not only get numbers faster than they can possibly be produced, we are getting progress reports on the fake numbers!

The minister "expects" revenues to increase, in other words he is hoping and praying that they will increase as his numbers are all based on pure guesswork.

Are there any reports and statistics concerning the "Quality Tourism Program"?

No transparency, in any sector. So these are just wishful thinking. Or the fortune tellers predictions!

All this increase despite them doing their best to discourage tourists from coming here, maybe those new forms to fill out have had a positive effect, how about another one?

This just emphasises the need to reform the education system starting with math. ?

With all current problems, virtually empty arrivals hall at swampy, mall retail at a low & market retail being wiped out by the green supreme being these figures are hot air & disgrace ...

Yes. It's a typical number, consistent with past reports. Although how they estimate it is anyone's guess.

The second quarter does not end until the 30th June 2016. Does the Thai Ministry of BS employ their own version of Mystic Meg to make prediction of Thai truth well in advance of real figures that could be floored and inaccurate?

Yet the tourism infrastructure is stuck in the 80's.

When will they put some of that into fixing up the places that generate that revenue?

Those big spending Chinese then!!

Roughly 11 billion pounds….$16 billion, making tourism very roughly a $60 to 70 billion business. The World Bank cites 2014 GDP at $404 billion. There was minimal growth 0.3% in 2015. Wiki gives tourist arrivals at 11 million in 2014 or about 1/3 of the figure TAT claims.

Historically tourism as a % of GDP has been around 6 to 7%, and now seems to have shot up to the 12 to 15% range. Why are numbers cited in Thai media never independently verifiable?

In the Land of Broken Smiles Thai tourism is king. Nobody sees the king walking naked!
