Officials at Pitakkiet Witthaya school Monday morning

CHIANG RAI — Police today were reticent to discuss the ongoing investigation into the cause of a deadly fire which killed at least 17 girls at a school dormitory in the early hours of Monday in Wiang Pa Pao district.

Local police commander Col. Prayad Singsin declined to give any update on the progress of the investigation Wednesday, deferring to provincial police chief Maj. Gen. Thanayin Thepraksa.

Tight-lipped equals no idea, probably trawling thaivisa looking for a good explanation.

^^ I would reckon they do not have forensic fire investigators on staff.

Headline is BS anyways, they already have said (erroneously) the fire was caused by light bulbs melting their fixtures.

"Police today were reticent to discuss the ongoing investigation into the cause of a deadly fire ..."

There can be any of a number of reasons for this:

1) They don't have a clue.

2) It was explained to them in technical terms....and They don't have a clue what was said.

3) The fault lies with someone who is in high authority and when it comes to telling the truth...They don't have a clue

Need I go any further?

...they were left unsupervised.....???

...this lame excuse by one of the 'attendants' 'taking a shower' sounds like utter fabrication....

...the fire raged....and people were burnt to a crisp.....

..shameless....

Tight lipped? there's already been how many articles, in the local and international press, about their theory???

I would say yes but I don't have a clue as to what you would say.

The prime cause for the tragedy was negligence. The school did not have adequate protection systems that were installed and / or worked or did not have sufficient escape exits available from what has been reported and the inspectors failed to do their job.

As to what caused it requires a forensics team to carry out a full investigation

The investigation can't be completed until they first decide who to blame it on.

Odd. I thought it was usual for the investigation to determine who was responsible not the other way round. The Thai way seems a bit a$$ about face to me.

But hey, what do I know? It's their country, I suppose they can kill as many of their own kids through negligence and incompetence as they like and then whitewash those responsible as much as they like.

Seems like a bit of a waste though.

There really is no pleasing some people is there? When the police are quick to capture a suspect they're "pinning it on a scapegoat". When they are tight lipped "they've got no clue"

Sheesh....

Maybe a lesson has been learned. It would be refreshing if they were waiting until they were sure and all the evidence was in before giving a clear and detailed explanation of the circumstances to the public, after first informing the parents. As opposed to spouting off nonsense just because someone puts a microphone in front of them.

Can this be happening?

Sounds pretty real-Thai-world to me...

Cambodia is quite a distance but Myanmar is close so someone from there will do

What ever the outcome sadly it will not make any difference or ensuring preventive measures are put in place to prevent it happening again at some school accommodation.
