FDA collects raw fish meat for tests

BANGKOK: -- A senior official of the Office of Food and Drug Administration visited five department stores in Bangkok to take raw fish samples for tests in order to determine whether any of them are contaminated with chemical dyes or microbes.

The field inspection to randomly collect raw fish samples by Dr Paisal Dunkum, deputy secretary-general of the FDA followed recent comments in the social media suggesting that some of the raw fish were chemically coloured.

He said that the law did not allow raw meat to be coloured or dyed. Violators face two years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to 20,000 baht.

Before consuming raw fish, Dr Paisal urged consumers to observe the fish colour whether it is natural or artificial for their safety. Fish that does not look fresh should not be consumed otherwise the consumers may suffer from food poisoning or afflicted with diarrhea.

BANGKOK — When police busted two Vietnamese nationals for allegedly mixing up bogus orange juice, the public received a grim reminder that what they eat is not always what it seems.

Following the fake orange juice sightings which bloomed like algae on social media, the buzz Thursday moved on to a report of another hungry question about tainted food: Old sashimi dyed to look fresh.

If you can easily see if the fish colour is natural or artificial, then why does Dr Paisal need to collect samples for testing?

He should be able to spot violations at the spot, or maybe it is not that simple as it now sounds?

'Before consuming raw fish, Dr Paisal urged consumers to observe the fish colour whether it is natural or artificial ...' And how exactly do we do that - obvious colour enhancement apart?

Unfortunately I have lost any faith in the FDA I had after the recent findings of the consumer rights advocacy group who performed tests on products being labeled "tested and found OK" by the FDA and it turned out about half the samples contained way above the limit for pesticides.

Don't know why I had any faith in the in the first place - it's not like they're immune to tea money.

Deputy Secretary General, eh?

So what happened to the weekly food sampling, analysis, and reporting program that would be appropriate for monitoring food contamination?

Haha! I crack myself up some time.

I never eat anything that's raw, in Thailand or anywhere else. Why take the risk?

Do you stay at home, never venture out by car, motor bike, cycle, bus or walk? Wrap yourself in cotton wool? Eat only what you prepare yourself from the freshest ingredients you can have delivered?

After all, why take the risk?

You'd be amazed at the number of guys in Pattaya etc that eat raw meat and don't get diarrhea.

Neither do I drink and drive, play with loaded guns or have unprotected sex. It's not an either/or proposition. It's called common sense.
