Hi all, i took over the finance on my friends car a few years ago, i've now finished paying the payments but i'm struggling to transfer the car in to my name. My friend is in the UK , in order to transfer the car they want a certificate of residence or proof that my friend is out the country. Has anyone any experience on this matter? My friend has no intention of coming back to Thailand any time soon.

should have transferred the finance loan to your name before he left the country.

You need him back in Thailand

He can go to Thai consulate or embassy and make a statement he is out of country and car should be transferred to xxx.

You had better determine exactly what is needed from him by the vehicle registration people (if they can tell you) and see if your friend will comply.

Paperwork could be mailed or couriered back and forth.

I too suspect he needs to sign some declaration or paperwork at the Thai embassy, not convenient if he lives far from London.

This is a really interesting situation, I'm from the UK and I sold my car in Thailand last year. I checked with a number of people about what I would have to do. I was able to use my Thai work permit but my understanding is that Brits who don't have this need a letter of residence from the British embassy in Thailand, it's around 3,500 baht. I don't really know but I'm tempted to agree with others that the Thai embassy in the UK could help. Good luck with this, I hope you can get it sorted. Your friend really should have helped you with this before you agreed to start paying his loan.

Edit: I bought my car on finance in 2010 and didn't receive the ownership book from the finance company until I had finished paying off the loan in 2012. They only transferred ownership to my name once the payments were complete. Did you inform the finance company when you started paying the finance? Perhaps they would be able to help.
